Trouble with Veils and Outdoor Ceremonies?

AmyLeigh, on August 6, 2009 at 2:11 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 14

I'm getting married up in a canyon (outdoors). I wanted to get an elbow-length veil with ribbon on the bottom, but will I have problems if it gets breezy? Do I need to put something on the veil (like pearls or crystals or something) to help weigh it down? I was going to pin the veil under my updo, so it falls just in the back.

My friend got married on a cliff of sorts - and it was really windy...her veil was blowing everywhere, but it looked really cool. It made for great pictures and I think it added to the romance of it all.

I had an outdoor ceremony on a cliff edge overlooking a river the breeze in the veil made for some beautiful pictures. When we kissed the wind blew it to wrap around my new husband. But you're right, you cant control which way it will blow so you are taking something of a chance of it going the totally wrong way at the wrong time, but even if that does happen it won't ruin anything and might even just be a nice memorable giggle moment. I dont think pearls or crystals on the edge would make too much of a difference as far as keeping it down.

Like Laura eluded to, just let it fall naturally wherever the wind blows it. IMO if you pin it, it'll look for less natural. Ironically as a photographer, we're usually looking for fans, etc. to create a natural windblown effect!

Like Laura had stated it will blow if it is windy however that can add to some very beautiful pictures. If you are really worried about it adding some type of bead work around the edges will help it a little but there is not guarantee that it will not blow especially if it is blowing really hard. I hope this helps. Good luck to you.

I think it looks pretty when it blows in the wind!

I had to get rid of mine and my daughters floral headpieces because the wind blew them off...of course, we were on the beach and a storm was blowing in... I'd say a typical day you'll probably be fine..and a veil will stay put better than a headpiece...

You might just keep the wind in mind when you set up your ceremony site that day...angle yourself so the wind doesnt become a problem...

I got married in the mountains and it really drove me crazy after a while. I finally had to have my husband hold it lightly in the back while we finished pics because it kept flying in my face and looked rediculous. I just quick took it off after the formal pics. It did look cool when the photographer had me stand so the wind would blow it and got some cool pics.

Wow ladies, thanks for the advice! I was all worried about wearing the veil, and now I am looking forward to it! I might just get a fingertip veil instead of elbow length! The pictures are amazing too, thanks Laura K!

By the way, Artistic Veil, I looked at the veil that I think you were talking about, with the shells, that comes to a "V" at the bottom. Gorgeous! I'm sure your niece was thrilled!

Yep - that's the one. Thank you! She has always been our little tom-boy but not on her wedding day - she was all chiffon and silk and beautiful. She tried on almost every one of my sample veils before she decided on the shape. Her beach theme made the shells a perfect solution for decoration and weight. I should put up a photo from the actual wedding....
