Trying dresses to see what suits my body best?

Victoria, on June 4, 2021 at 2:49 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7

I definitely have a ways to go (9/10/22). I need your opinions.. I understand that most bridal shop consultants work on commission. I'd hate to waste anyone's time, but I'd really like to try on dresses just to find out what suits my body best and what I feel good in. I see dresses online that I am in love with, but who's to tell that that certain style/fit would compliment me? Would a bridal shop be understanding of that and still allow me to try dresses on? I could very well find "the one" and make a purchase, but that's not my intentions going in for the first time. I need to learn, experience before making any fast decisions. Am I crazy? Lol.

Edit: It would only be myself and my MOH. I will not have an entourage.

You have every right to try on as many dresses as you'd like until you find "the one"! Any good consultant will be more than happy to help ease you into the process and help make each try-on as comfortable as possible. Finding a dress is one of the most exciting aspects of planning a wedding and a good bridal boutique will know this and not look at you as just $$$. Take your time and don't be afraid to let them know your intentions when going into a shop. If you start to feel the pressures from them, kindly let them know you need some time.

Enjoy this part of your planning and make the most of it! Good luck on your dress search!

Yes 100% go to a bridal salon and try on dresses, no consultant is going to be mad at you for that! My mom owned a bridal store my whole childhood and not appointment is set with the expectation you're going to buy something!

My wedding is 9/2/2022, I'm going dress shopping aka trying on next month! Dresses could take anywhere from 9-12 months to come in so getting in early to know what you want or don't want is a good thing and consultants understand this!

A bridal shop local to me sets up style appointments for brides who have absolutely no clue what they're looking for. I don't know how a usual appointment works, but when I went to my style appointment we started by going over what I was looking for and what I thought I liked, but didn't actually stick with that when trying on. The consultant picked dresses for me that were a bit all over the place and narrowed things down as we went along. By the end I had a much better idea of what I thought I liked and the consultant has a list so she can call me if anything similar comes in.

I enjoyed knowing that the person I worked with didn't expect to get a sale from me at all and it made the whole appointment more relaxed, which was important because I needed to just focus on what I liked. Maybe you can check around to smaller boutiques local to you and see if any would do something similar?

You don't have to let them know you're just trying on dresses. Just make the me the appointment and try on dresses you're interested. It's part of the job for them.

Try on all the dresses your heart desires! It's a big purchase for a big day, so you want to make sure you pick the dress that makes you feel the most beautiful and comfortable in!

I found my dresses in March at the 3rd salon I went to. The first two made me feel pressured to purchase a dress I wasn't totally in love with. The 1st salon (BHLDN) didn't have even half of the dresses I loved online available in the store. They had maybe 50 in-store for you to try on, which was a huge downer. The 2nd salon didn't allow myself or my 2 guests to look at dresses, and even after telling her my opinion on the dresses she pulled for me, she kept pulling dresses the same style as before, and didn't take my feedback into consideration. They had over 300 dresses in-store, and she only put me in 5 before she tried to make me decide between 2 that she thought were 'the one' (they weren't). The 3rd store was the most amazing experience. I felt heard, seen, and cared for, which is SO important when dress shopping!!

I tried on so many styles and ended up loving TWO that were the exact same style, just different fits. One is a ballgown, the other is fit & flare. I ended up purchasing both because I felt amazing in both, and wanted a surprise twist at the reception. They're also strapless, which I NEVER would have gone for, but my consultant knew exactly how to pin it so it would fit me like it would after alterations.

Stick to your gut, but also be open minded. Try on as many dresses as you want, and don't feel pressured to purchase a dress just because you're trying them on.

This was my plan as well. I knew I wanted to get my dress online if possible, because it just seemed SO.MUCH.CHEAPER. But I had no idea if what I liked online would actually look good on my oddly proportioned body.

I went to two salons to try on similar styles and I didn't feel particularly pressured at all by either consultant. I think they all know that it comes with the territory. One of the girls even told me she was so grateful that I was SO easy to deal with and knew exactly what I was looking for.

So yes...for SURE go try on dresses and don't feel bad if you don't buy anything. It's a big decision, and most consultants know that

I finally found my dress at the 13th store I went to. There were some close ones but nothing felt like it until I put on my dress. I felt super guilty "wasting everyone's time" but then I realized that I can't force myself to feel a way I don't and its nobody's fault. So definitely go try on as many dresses as it takes!
