Trying to apply for marriage license in nj

Destany, on April 2, 2021 at 11:09 AM Posted in New Jersey Planning 0 5
Hello everyone! Only 23 days left for me and time is really flying by! We live in NJ and are having trouble figuring out how the heck to send in our application for the marriage license. We want to finalize the papers before our big day because we are getting married in NC with a friend as our “officiant” (not ordained or official). Apparently we need to go to our local municipal building but they are closed to the public, won’t return my calls or emails. They say people can drop off certain things but marriage license applications aren’t mentioned. The application also requires a witness so I am unsure if they can sign it before dropping it off. I am very very stressed and am wondering if any NJ brides out there know info that can help!

Thanks so much!

So I found the process to be fairly simple - I live in PA but I'm getting married in NJ. I made an appointment with the municipal, filled out part of the form, and then at the office we had to show ID and the witness signed the paperwork. Are you getting legally married in NJ before your wedding day in NC? If not, you should also check what NC's marriage application process is since you might need to apply there.

Yes we want to get officially legally married in NJ because our ceremony in NC is not going to be official. we do not have an ordained officiant. We found NC had complicated rules of who could officiate and would not allow our friend to do it, so we planned on getting married in NJ before our wedding. we hoped the NC wedding would be basically a vow ceremony and reception after the license was signed.

That being said our municipal building is closed to the public... so I can’t go in with the paperwork or anything like you mentioned doing. Not sure what county you did that in but for us we are in Hunterdon county and we have to go to the municipal building where we live. They closed February 1st 2021 to the public. Not sure what to do Smiley sad very frustrating. All I can do is keep calling and emailing I guess!

Oh shoot that stinks! I got mine in Galloway and they were super accommodating. Have you tried calling nearby municipalities to see what they recommend? I assume the website doesn't mention what to do if you need a marriage license? I do know that one of the benefits of COVID is that there's no longer a 72 hour waiting period so you have a bit of wiggle room to get it figured out since you should get it same day.

Oh wow we had no difficulty and we got our stuff last May when everything was really shut down. I would keep trying to email and call until they answer! We made an appointment with the lady and did everything out in the parking lot! Where in NJ are you?
