Trying to postpone but venue won’t let me

VM, on December 22, 2020 at 1:05 AM Posted in Planning 0 11
My fiancé and I had picked May 30, 2021 since December 20219, so before the pandemic. We had sent out our save the dates, but lately we’re thinking that by May we might not be able to have the huge wedding we dreamed of. I know many people eloped and we actually did do a courthouse wedding in January! So now we want a huge party. I reached out to my venue today asking if we can move it to May 2022 and stated that they are not allowing ppl to postpone until 90 days before the event which would be March 1, 2021. My dilemma with this is our second deposit is due January 31st and we 100% want to move the wedding to 2022. There is nothing in the contract about rescheduling only cancelling. Any suggestions on what else I can do to get it pushed? Do I just wait until March when we have already made up our minds? We do have to communicate a new date to our other vendors too 😖

I would also like to add that my fiancé is currently unemployed so pushing the wedding would allow us time to save money for the wedding we want.

Maybe ask if the deposit must be payed if you are planning on postponing, make it clear that postponing is the only option and since the date of the wedding would be changing to would the date the money is due. I say push for the change and tell the venue that is the only option due to covid, restrictions, family, ect. whatever it takes to get the date moved.

I recommend you look at other other options such as canceling and going woth a much more affordable venue. Again, look at other options as in research, then make a decision

I would ask the other vendors if they can put a soft hold on a couple new dates in 2022 until you're able to postpone. That way, hopefully at least one of those dates will be available with your venue when they do finally let you postpone, and your vendors will already be on board for that new date.

You definitely don't want to try to switch all of your vendors just 90 days out from your May 2021 date - it may not be possible to line them all up for May 2022 and will also be unfair to your vendors who have turned down other weddings for your 2021 date.

You can try to see if your other vendors will also "hold" another date for you in 2022, but in my experience most vendors will only allow you to have one date on the books at a time per deposit. Even if you can get your vendors to add a second date for you, you have no guarantee that the exact date you pick in May 2022 will be available at your venue if you aren't able to actually book that date until March 2021. It's possible that between now and then your venue will book all of their May 2022 dates and none will be available.

I'd really push back on your venue about postponing now and use the fact that rescheduling policies are not included in your contract. Also see what options you have if you "cancel" your May 2021 wedding and then book a May 2022 one instead.

Sorry you are having to go through this!

I'd push back and say you're not willing to pay the second deposit until you're able to have confirmation that the date will be moved. You've paid your first deposit, so they are earning interest on your money for over a year.

My wedding was canceled 2 weeks before my wedding. I was in that first wave of COVID cancellations the 1st week of April. I have since had to reschedule 3 times. It's very doable to wait until 90 days out IMO. I had no issues picking new dates with my vendors.

I would cancel and postpone especially if you are having a hard time financially due to your fh being unemployed have a wedding you can afford so I would postpone and or find a cheaper venue

Yes! Exactly. My photographer is already booked for the date i want in 2022. So it’s totally not unreasonable to ask to postpone now. I pushed back on them and they finally decided I can postpone 🙏🏼🙌🏼 Granted, there is a fee, but I will take it for a piece of mind!

Oh yay. I'm glad you pressed them. That was going to be the best advice I had but I didn't know if it would work. I'm glad it worked out for you!
