TSA Pre-Check Name Change

Nicole, on May 9, 2017 at 12:31 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 11

Has anyone had any experience with changing their name on the TSA Pre-Check? I'm getting married in September and am flying for our honeymoon in Oct, again in Nov, Jan and Feb. I was planning to start the name change process in Oct/Nov, but it seems that the Pre-Check is difficult.

Will I have a problem if I am flying and using my number under my new name and they haven't updated the system to my new name?

Let me know what your experience was! It seems to take 1-3 months, so I was going to start once I got the marriage license in.

Are you willing to go without the precheck for all those flights? Passports take time to come in and im sure the TSA precheck will be no different.

As far as I know all ID has to match what they have on record.

ETA: could you delay changing your name until after all this flying is done?

I would like to, but my fiance may be transferring to an international office for work, and I'll need to submit documentation with my new name for visa requirements as well.

Here's the info for US and US Customs:

    https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/1209/kw/tsa pre check/session/L3RpbWUvMTQ2MzIzOTIzNS9zaWQvUXRPaDN1UW0=/suggested/1

Looks like you will be fine (though a bit more hastle) inside the US and re-entering the US with just a copy of your Marriage Certificate and ID with your old name as well if there is a difference between the two.

For other countries you will have to check with each consulate to determine how they handle differences in naming.

As for the process with TSA, seems like it still take most folks 90-120 days. :-(

Here's and older blog that might be helpful:

I work for the Dept of Defense and we use precheck for official travel. Im almost positive it's tied to your "Known Traveler Number" which should not change. So I don't think there will be an issue.

The travel in 2018 isn't booked yet which is my concern. I'm thinking that once I change my global entry, that should change the pre-check.

I'd try to wait until after your planned travel to change your name (if you can)! Changing the name on your plane ticket once it is purchased is a huuuuuuuuge pain, and updating my new name on my miles programs was the hardest part of the name change process for me! Seriously - they required more documents than my credit card companies did.

@Nicole, I just got my Global Entry and they told me I'd have to come back in person with my new passport (and he suggested bringing copy of marriage certificate) to update my Global Entry, too. According to him, you are correct that that should update your precheck as well.

I signed up and was approved with my maiden name for TSA Precheck. We were recently married so I went through the whole name change process (social security, drivers license, bank cards etc.) and lastly my TSA precheck. You have to call the 1800 number they provide and get you on a list for someone to contact you. Right now its about a 1 to 3 month wait. I’m on month 2 and haven’t heard from them. I called and emailed a few times and all they tell me is my request is in line and its going to take up to the 3rd month mark just to be able to send my documents showing my name change. So long story short it is such a hassel. I would wait till after your travels because your TSA # is attached to your name you registered with. I also signed up for Global Entry with my new last name and was approved. Global Entry also has TSA attached to it.

Did you ever end up getting your name changed? I am on month 1.5. It's such a pain! Thanks!

My name legally changed at Social Security and on my passport last month, but my state ID and TSA Pre-Check number still have my old name. I purchased a flight for this month with my old name and used TSA Pre-Check without a problem. TSA Pre-Check does not communicate or share information with other agencies (e.g. SSA or the passport center).

As of June 2018, TSA Pre-Check is still requiring individuals with name changes to fax a marriage license, dated photo ID, known traveler number, and an identifier they give you over the phone. The expected wait time is 1-3 months because "they don't have a lot of people in that department." Once you try to change your name with Pre-Check, you can try to travel with Pre-Check assuming you still have a valid photo ID with your old name. You cannot use Pre-Check on a ticket with a different name than they have in the system.

Rant: Reading all of this just incites more frustration. Changing one's name seems so archaic anymore... Spouses who don't have to change their name have no idea how much of a hassle it is and in addition, the loss of identity, just abandoning the old name everyone grew up knowing you as. I've been married for 5 months now and I am still trying to work through changing everything. It's time consuming, a lot of work and very frustrating. From prescriptions, medical records and TSA to log in credentials, it is an enormous undertaking. As you can see, I am over all of this b/c it is has taken so much of my energy and time. Rant over. Thanks for the info everyone. Up next? Conquering TSA...
