Tulle as table Linens?

Hayley, on October 7, 2015 at 10:37 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 12

I am on a frantic (ok I still have 8 months to the wedding) search for the best looking (and absolute cheapest possible) option for table linens. My budget is slim. I've found some colorful, pretty, and cheap disposable linen toppers on Webstaurant.com. The largest they have is 82' round, and my tables are 60". So, that alone isn't big enough. I've thoughts about ordering in bulk Tulle to make table skirts out of and placing these toppers over it. (I found 40 Yards 54 " wide for $14 on papermart.com).

Has anyone else tried this, or can give an indication on how many yards of tulle I would need per table, so I have an idea of how price-reasonable this option really is? Or any suggestions on other cheap table linen ideas you've tried.

I have looked at prices of real linens at places like linencompany.com, linentablecloth.com, as well as disposable options at places like orientaltrading.com, webstaurant.com, and smartyhadaparty.com.

I am open to any and all suggestions & ideas!

Watch local craigslist ads for stuff, There is also several facebook groups for wedding stuff, I know St. Louis has a local page and that is where I sold some of my wedding things.

If they have 82" round, why isn't that enough? That leaves about 11 inches of draping off the edge, making them lap length instead of floor length. It doesn't look as pretty in pictures but it's easier on guests so they're not tripping over the bottoms.

I have considered just using those and have them be lap length, I'm just still undecided and searching for an alternative until I do. Trying to cover all my bases in research Smiley smile

I second efavormart.com. They were the cheapest I found when I was searching.

Gotcha. Tulle is so thin that I don't think it would be good to use as any sort of table covering or skirt unless it's lined with something else or several layers of it.

    @rosemary -

Yes! That's exactly what I'm seeing on my head. Any advice / estimate on how much I'd need a table to use as a skirt?

To clarify - I am not intending to do a single layer as the liner - I know I would need a few layers to make it look ok. My biggest question is, how many layers is enough?

I would not recommend do this for tables where guests will be seated. It will tangle in the chairs and feet too easily and at a minimum irritate your guests...worst case scenario a guest gets their feet tangled in layers of tulle, pulls the whole thing off, falls and breaks a hip. Just sayin'...

This look would be fine to do on the fronts of tables where no one will be sitting and it takes a lot of tulle to get decent coverage for this look.

I ordered all my rounds to hit slightly lower than halfway to the ground - I didn't want people's chairs to get tangled in them. I ordered my linens from linentablecloth.com and they are awesome; I bought aqua satin rounds for all my round tables (11) and then I bought a bunch of plain white economy polyester rectangles for the serving tables and bar area. Oh, and also some square aqua satin ones for our three outdoor seating tables as well. I spent less than $150 overall and the quality is awesome. They have 90" and also 108" rounds as well if you really want to do floor length.

http://www.linentablecloth.com/tablecloths/round-tablecloths/90-inch-round-satin-tablecloth-white.html - these are half off right now. Your case of 24 would be about $3.50 or so each, right? But they're disposable and not reusable or able to be resold. These are $1.50 more per cloth, longer and actually round instead of square, AND you could resell them.

Celebrations, you read my mind. There have to be other alternatives. If you have a fabric outlet in the general vicinity, go there and visit the remnant room. I've gotten killer deals that way.

I do not recommend tulle. It is practically clear so you'd have to use multiple layers to get color and a lot. While tulle is cheap, its probably more cost effective to find a fabric you only need 1 layer of virus many layers of tulle. The best way to really see the color of tulle is to bunch it up, which of course would not be practical for a table cloth. A possible fabric could be organza, the price for this fabric ranges, but if you do a little digging I think you can find it at an afford price.

My caterer referred me to www.smartyhadaparty.com they have disposable and very inexpensive cloth options. They got great reviews! I've heard if you ask for a discount on their Facebook they always give you a coupon code. They also have lots of other great decor items!
