Tulle in Pole Barn

Taylor, on July 31, 2018 at 12:21 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 13

Hello all! FH and I are having our reception in a large pole barn on the family farm. Since it is a new, metal building, it does not feel rustic at all. I’d like it to be formal and very romantic, so I’d like to decorate with tulle. I understand this could get a bit pricy, but my bigger concern is if it would actually turn out well. What are your thoughts? (Pictures below: one of the actual barn and the other of my desired outcome). Thank you!!

First you need to check with the venue to see what you can do décor wise. Some have restrictions on what can be used on the walls (no nails for example). Then you may need to hire this out since there could be liability issues as well. See if the venue has a preferred vendor or someone that has been used in the past and get a referral. Happy Planning!

I was under the impression it's not an actual venue, but a family owned metal barn.

That will be expensive. So much fabric. In my opinion, a metal pole barn and formal don't go together.

Unless you’ve done this in this space before, I would hire a professional. That’s a lot of electrical to set up. You’ll likely need a generator unless the barn has a good amount of power. This will be more than a bit pricy.

I originally wanted to decorate the ceiling of my wedding tent like that, but the logistics of it would be too difficult and complicated to set up. I'm having my wedding on my family farm as well.

In my opinion, if someone is looking up at the ceiling during my wedding, something is wrong lol.

It is going to be way to expensive to do the whole barn. I would say use fabric and lighting strategically. Maybe drape the entrances in fabric and if you are having a sweetheart table, frame the background with some fabric and lighting. Maybe light other certain areas like where the cake is or around the bar and food areas. Use fabric on the cake table and on the front of the bar.

Agree. Definitely not a job for a novice in that big of a space. I don't think tulle will give you the desired effect you are looking for. Looks more like a sheer fabric to me.

I don't think fabric hanging from the ceiling is going to make a metal barn look formal.

Maybe formal isn’t the right word. We’re having the ceremony on this rooftop though, so I just don’t want the reception to feel every casual

Your venue is the first thing that sets the tone for your reception. A metal pole barn isn't going to feel less casual without some major money spent to transform it. I've been in one of those barns and even the sound is just loud and lots of echos. It sounds like you are in a metal building. And if it rains... Sweet Jesus, that's so loud you can't even hear yourself over it.
