Tulle wedding dress is wrinkled

Future Mrs. K, on December 9, 2018 at 11:29 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 9

My dress has been at my moms house hanging in a closet in a garment bag (this is how my bridal salon told me to store it) since I got it in May. It has many layers of tulle and the train is somewhat big and long. Because of this, the bottom of the dress is bunched up in the bottom of the garment bag and when I took it out today to try it on, I noticed the tulle is wrinkled. First, do you think this is okay and I can continue to store it this way until it goes in for alterations in a couple months? Second, how am I supposed to avoid this from happening after I pick it up from being altered? I read online not to steam it yourself as it can cause discoloration so I am worried how I’m supposed to store and transport it between alterations and the actual wedding day.

We steamed my dress the day of and it came out fine (the bottom is tulle). As long as you know how to properly use it I think it shouldn't be an issue. It's kind of the nature of tulle - it wrinkles.

Do you know what steamer you used?

I kept mine in the garment bag for 15 months. It was wrinkled, but my alterations lady was able to steam it beautifully! She then held on to it for me until the weekend of my wedding. She had lots of space so she was able to store it outside of a garment bag and keep it perfect. When it was time to transport it we folded down the backseat in my car, put down a clean sheet, and lay the dress out on it. After a 3 1/2 hour drive it was still perfect.

Don't know the exact brand (one of my bridesmaids brought it) but it's just a regular, probably bought at Walmart or Kohl's type steamer. You can see it on the far left of this pic lol. Honestly I think no matter what steamer you get, just make sure you know how to use it, and use filtered water if possible. (We did!)

I purchased a handheld Rowenta steamer from Amazon to use on my dress and veils and it worked beautifully. I also brought with me a gallon of distilled water. I wasn't taking any chances with tap water.

And you're fine to leave your dress as it is until alterations. Your seamstress will press it for you before you pick it up.

My dress is tulle as well and was advised by the bridal consultants and seamstress to not use a steamer to avoid shrinkage or damage.

They suggested running a hot shower for 10-15 minutes and hang the dress somewhere in the bathroom to let the steam get rid of the wrinkles. You could do it a day or two before your wedding.
