Tungsten V. Titanium??

Savannah, on April 23, 2009 at 11:41 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 15

So, I know it's a tad early but we're looking for wedding bands already. Mine is the easy part, but we are having trouble with is deciding whether to do his in titanium or tungsten. I've priced both and titanium seems to be cheaper at most places, but I hear tungsten is more durable. What are your experiences with this?? Is one better than they other? Is Tungsten really not able to be re-sized because Tungstenworld.com had a lifetime sizing option. Please help!! lol

Hi I proposed to my fiance with a titanium ring. Its a great ring it hasnt scratched or anything I would go with the titanium. Also I bought his at kay jewlers on sale for $100 and then I saw the same exact ring on ebay for like $20 dont go to a retail store they are much cheaper on ebay.

We went with tungsten for my FH's ring. It is supposed to be unbreakable (for the most part) and scratch resistant.

His class ring was in silver and it is scratched like crazy and bent in a oval shape from the wear and tear it has endured over the years, that's why he decided to go with tungsten.

One of my friends didn't buy it because it couldn't be resized, which I don't understand. I don't understand that logic because we are fully grown adults, why would your ring size change?

But either way, we bought his at walmart for 60$. But they did have a lot of options on ebay too.

I tell everyone this- BE CAREFUL WITH EITHER OF THESE METALS!

I don't know what your FH does, but if it's a desk job, and he's not dealing with any heavy machinery- then he should be fine. My FH want's Tungsten (because it's the metal found in armor piercing bullets...go figure) but he's also an engineer- so no risk of loosing his fingers.

But- my Dad worked in factories for years and knew many men who were missing their ring finger because their rings didn't break and caused them to loose their fingers!

www.overstock.com has some great inexpensive options for either metal, and yes- you really can't resize them because the metal is so hard, but you want to make sure you have some sort of switching out policy simply because you can loose weight, gain weight, break a finger...those factors can alter your ring size.

My Fiances is tungsten i dont know if they do this at all places but i got his at reeds jewelers and i think we paid a little extra but we got a lifetime warranty for resizing. The actuall ring wont get resized but they will get you a new one in the size you need, as long as you dont have the ring serviced by anyone other then them.

Also if you go with the tungsten it is a good idea to order them a little early because they cant be resized you have to order the size from the dealer we had to order a quarter size.

They are both good metals. We went with the tungsten because it was more durable and we found one we really liked. We went shopping in the jewelery shops and found the ring we liked for $180. That same ring we purchased on ebay or $32.

I work at TJ Maxx at the jewelry counter and we have tungsten rings for $19.99. They are very durable and alot of single men come in to buy them for themselves! They have a beautiful shine too!

    Hi,

We're looking for wedding bands ourselves and all this time have been weighing between platinum and palladium...until we read your post here about tungsten and titanium.

Can anyone tell us the difference between these four kinds of metal?

Sorry we're not helping but asking for one instead.

    Thanks!

We are looking for wedding bands also. I say Titanium, the tungsten ring can not be resized as you mentioned and it can not be cut. So in case the ring gets stuck it will be more harder to get it off. Also tungsten rings are heavier and weigh more then lead. Remember it's going on the finger.

    Also congrats on the wedding!!!

Actually neither titanium or tungsten can be cut with conventional ring cutters. But both can easily be broken with a tool that is similar to vise grips and can be removed in an emergency.

The cutting of titanium rings is a fallacy, they can be cut with the standard ring cutters that EMT's carry. Search online, you'll find the same results. It is a tactic that jewelers use to upsell you on gold. Fact is, titanium is no harder to cut than steel.

FWIW, someone commented about being cautious of the strength of the aforementioned metals. Yes, they are very strong. However, best practices are to remove a ring/jewelery in a dangerous situation. I race sailboats and know of two people that have lost fingers due to wedding bands. One was a woman, and it was her thinner engagement band that got hung on a cleat, she slipped while the boat was drydocked, and fell ~10 feet. Gold is plenty strong enough to cause serious injury!

The weight difference is something your FH may want to consider when making his choice. These 2 metals will feel very different on his hand.

Tungsten and titanium are both great economical options for wedding bands. Tungsten will cost a few more dollars, but still shouldn't be over $120 for a band, at least at http://www.weddingringsforever.com

Tungsten will hold it's finish better and resist scratching more than titanium will. It is heavier, and thus feels more luxurious like platinum, but some guys don't like that anyway.

The reason somebody would want another size eventually is in case they gain/lose weight with time for example. This is why you want to have a good replacement/warranty policy also. I wasn't comfortable with overstock or ebay for those reasons. My FI works with his hands a lot (construction), so having something scratch resistant with some weight to it was a perfect fit. We went with tungsten over titanium for those reasons, and couldn't be happier.
