Turkish airlines?

Karyn, on November 1, 2016 at 9:31 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 12

Has anyone had any experiences with Turkish Airlines? Are they safe? I've read some pretty terrible things but most were from last year, when they were expanding rapidly. Anyone flown internationally with them recently? We have an hour layover in turkey.

Ireland. I know that terrorist attack was bad, but they did not get past the front doors. Honestly I am more concerned with some pilot errors I have read about. We bought this on a groupon, so I don't think we can change the airline. Not sure what to do. Probably will just go on an adventure, but I was just curious if anyone had any horror stories I guess

I can't speak to the situation in Istanbul, but I've taken Turkish Airlines a few times and it's great. I've arrived safely every time and it's far more pleasant than US airlines- in economy class, they give you free, delicious food and drinks. On my Houston-Istanbul flight in economy, I also got an amenity kit and had on-demand TV/movies.

I flew with once. It was an OK experience. Nothing bad and nothing good either.

I am choosing Air France for my upcoming trip. The service is much nicer.

http://www.airlineratings.com/ratings.php?id=34 looks like they have a 6 out of 7 safety rating. Honestly with a carrier that size I wouldn't give safety a second thought. If they are allowed to fly to/from the United States they are subject to all kinds of monitoring. I would only potentially worry about safety with some of the smaller domestic carriers around the world in various regions where the oversight may not be what we are used to.

As far as service goes I would choose Turkish over most carriers. Turkish was one of the nicer airlines I've flown, with fun amenity kits even in economy etc.

No offense to O&L but I wholeheartedly disagree. Air France was one of the worst experiences I have ever had. The rude and incompetent check in employees had no clue which counter we were supposed to be using and sent us back and forth between 2 lines like 4 times and almost made us miss our flight.

Edited to add: All that said if your final destination in Ireland and from the US I am not sure it would be worth flying so far out of your way, the price difference would have to be pretty big to make it worth all those extra hours in the air IMO

I flew with them last may. It was a great flight. They gave us an amazing snack. We actually got extras because they were so good. I have no complaints. I don't think I would want to use them to fly to Ireland though. Doesn't seem to make since. That seems way out of the way.

I flew on Turkish airlines from Istanbul to Kayseri back in 2010 (so my experience may not be as relevant now), but I couldn't really tell a difference between that flight and any of the other ones I've taken in the US.

Thank you!! I really needed someone to ease my mind about all this.

Alicia, I'm not sure. Honeymoon was his thing. But they have several options on there.

Also, bc of the groupon, we can't change our flights. But I've heard its pretty common to have this kind of stop that is further from your destination.

We were supposed to fly home from Rome last summer on Turkish Airlines they cancelled the flight when we got there and were HORRIBLE to deal with in getting us on another flight when they finally did they put us on stand by if the airline worker in Germany (new layover) wasn't so nice and upgraded us to the only open seats we wouldn't have gotten home for another day. After this happened a lot of people told me this is common for Turkish Airlines they have an extremely high last minute cancellation rate, I would never use them again even if it was the only option!!!!

It seems like everyone I know has a tale about a flight being cancelled and causing horrible inconvenience and how they will never fly that airline again.... and every story is about a different airline. My parents just had an American Airlines flight cancelled and 24 hours later they were put on a different flight that required a layover when their original flight was nonstop. Sh!t happens.

Just cross your fingers that if one of your flights is significantly delayed that it is the leg of the flight departing from Ireland, because then EU laws mean Turkish Airlines would have to pay you 600 Euros for the inconvenience.

I fly on it regularly and it's fantastic. Most Mediterranean countries consider it one of the best airlines to travel with.
