We went with black. I WANTED charcoal gray (dark gray), but it was completely out of the budget. And the guys wore suits, not tuxes.

We were able to get a great deal on a nice suit ($138 incl tax) through the "buy 1 get 3 free" sale at JosABank. The guys ended up with nice basic suits tailored to them and that they own. They aren't super high-end but they are perfect for guys who will likely only wear them 1-3x times per year.

We rented a dark grey from tuxedo junction. As for the vest/tie... My girls will be in a dusty lilac. The boys will be in serene which is a blue. FH will have a blue vest with a blue striped tie and an ivory handkerchief. GMs will be in same blue vest diff solid blue tie and blue handkerchief. Our officiant (FHs best friend) will be in ivory vest, ivory striped tie, and ivory handkerchief. They all looked so good together. They were on the higher side for rental at $165 but then FH was free.

My guys are in tan suits with tan vests and regency ties. Regency is basically a bright purple. Since my dress is ivory they WI have ivory shirts. The groom will have an ivory tie.

Tuxs? Black. Only. Suits? Those grey suits that are so popular now are really attractive and they do look good on almost every guy. Love tan suits, especially for the summer and the beach.

Don't match your officiant to your bridal party. Even if they are a friend/relative, they need to be different.

I don't like grooms matching bridesmaids. Too much prom for me to be honest it comes off as slightly immature.

If you have a more formal event - black tux. Less forum - grey suit. I would keep the plum color out of it. Give him a plum flower to pin on vest if you want.

Any shade of gray would be nice. Brown would also look nice. It goes especially well with ivory and it looks good with dark purple.

If the guys are wearing vests- don't match to the bridesmaids- match to their jacket colour.

I did end up doing matching ties, but not vests. I wanted to get something that wasn't too matchy matchy but all the ties that I tried just looked like regular work-wear, not wedding. And I think this color looks pretty cool Smiley smile This is a suit that I got my GM's from Jos. A Banks, it's dark grey. FH is wearing a black tux, with white shirt and ivory vest/tie to match my ivory dress. sortof like the attached pic.
