Two Last Names

Jessica, on December 5, 2019 at 12:19 AM Posted in Married Life 0 4
I got married on November 17th, 2019. Currently my husband has two last names because when he was born his mom and dad both have him their last name. This is popular in the Mexican culture to have two last names. Legally his mom’s last name is last and his dad’s last name is my husband’s middle name. My husband and I discussed that I will take his dad’s last name but I’m not sure if legally this will create any problems down the road unless my husband goes to social security and changes his last name to match my last name. Does anyone have any insight or suggestions?

Your husband doesn’t need to change his last name unless he wants to. My mom is Hispanic and typically the female takes the husbands first last name (dads last name). My aunts last name has “de” on hers, so it’s her maiden last name “of” husbands last name so she still has her last name but signifying she’s also married.

You just need to change it to his dads last name Smiley smile

No, it won't. So long as you consistently use the same last name, it doesn't matter that yours is different from your husband's. The only issue I can see is that you should not refer to his dad's last name as his middle name. It is actually the first of your husband's last names--kind of like a hyphenated name, except that they don't use hyphens in the Mexican culture. If you use this terminology, it will make it a lot easier to explain why you are changing your name to the first of his last names.
