Uber passes as wedding favors

Sarah, on November 20, 2017 at 12:19 PM Posted in Planning 0 29

So after months of going back and forth on what to do for favors or whether we should do them at all because most people don't care about them, we decided on Uber passes and I just wanted to share a little about it for anyone who might want to do it too. Basically you upload your guests emails (I chose one email for each couple or family I knew was coming together) and set a price limit per ride (as low as $5), and whether you're giving them one ride or round trip, and then a date and time window where the pass is good. You pay a service fee (mine was $12.50) and you're done! They set a max amount you'll be charged, email everyone their pass, and you only get charged for passes people use, 3-5 days after the event. We're doing an open bar so I'm glad no one has to worry about getting home safely.

@o&s we did per group coming together, so one pass for each couple or family. Definitely not everyone has Uber in their phone, but we're getting married in Kauai and Uber is the main way of getting around there since rental cars are so expensive and cabs are so scarce so most of our guests are planning on using Uber while they're there the week of the wedding anyway. But if they never use the pass it's ok, we won't be charged for those, but at least we didn't waste money on monogrammed shot glasses no one will ever use lol

I do like this idea but I'm not sure if I'd call this a wedding favour. I've been to weddings with guest transportation such as a shuttle between reception and hotel where most guests were staying and it was more a nice gesture than an actual favour which to me would be a physical object. Having said that, favours aren't required so I guess that doesn't matter!

We did this, but it wasn't our favors. We explained the code and our coordinator managed calling the ubers and charging his account (we were billed for it later). I think it was a great option for transportation, but not really a gift.

I think its fine. I mean favors arent necessary anyways. I would assume those who are familiar would use it as their transportation to the wedding. I wouldnt refer to it as favors though, just providing transportation.

I think this is a great option! Thanks for the explanation. I had seen people refer to it before, but wasn't sure how it worked.

MiniMe- I think there are other ways to do it. Most people just get a code and provide it to the guests. I've never heard of it being done this way.

This seems like a very cool service to provide. Thanks for sharing the information.

So you don't provide a free ride but a pre-determined amount off if they use the service. And you only get charged for people that use their favour. You have a max amount set, does this match the amount of tokens given out?

It's a cute idea, but I wouldn't call it favor.

Renting a bus for transportation isn't considered a favor, so this shouldn't be either. It's the same idea...

This isn't a favor. I am paying for a shuttle bus for my guests but I wouldn't call it a favor. I know it is not a popular opinion but I like favors when well thought out. I will be doing an edible favor.

@keisha yes, it's a max amount off of their ride. I picked my amount based on who was staying the furthest from the venue, what their uber fare estimate was to get there, and used that as the max for everyone, so everyone's ride should be free. The island is quite small, so the furthest destination is a $20 fare. I set my ride max to $25 to be safe. The max amount set for the event is the total if everyone used all of their credit, so I had 10 groups of people who each got $50 (we did round trip vouchers), so my max is $500 for the day.

I guess I should have clarified when I said favors. We are putting out snack boxes for everyone to take with them when they leave if they want to, but this is something I consider a gift to our guests, because rather than a shuttle or a bus that picks up from one place, each couple or family gets a private car from their front door to the venue, and then back again, at whatever time they want it, starting from an hour before the wedding to an hour after the reception ends. I think it being a higher level of service and more private for each guest does make it something nice we're doing for them, whether you call it a favor or not.

So how is everyone getting to the event? How are they supposed to know there is an uber ride back home? Are you telling guests ahead of time?

@lb we emailed all of our guests (we only have 40) ahead of time and let them know we'd be doing this, and to look for the uber email. I also let them know if they didn't want to get an email from Uber to let me know and I'd send them the code myself so no one's email was given to Uber without their permission. The ubers will pick them up when they request it and then drop them back off

If it is a small island, will they be able to service your guests in a timely fashion? I live outside the city and Uber is not really a huge thing. if I had 30 people calling for an Uber at the same time there would be a long wait

@keisha yes, I asked around, and have a wedding coordinator who is local, and Uber is everywhere out there. My DOC has had several brides this year do this for their wedding day transportation and the longest wait she said was about 20 minutes, which we warned our guests about, and also why we gave them an extra hour on each side of the wedding start and end time to use their voucher so they can request it early without stressing

The voucher is only good the day of your wedding with a pre determined start or end time? This is not something they can use a week later to take a trip into the city? Or the next day to the airport?

@keisha you can set the dates and timeframe that the voucher is good. I did from an hour before our wedding to an hour after. You can do a voucher good for several days if you wanted.
