Uber passes as wedding favors

So after months of going back and forth on what to do for favors or whether we should do them at all because most people don't care about them, we decided on Uber passes and I just wanted to share a little about it for anyone who might want to do it too. Basically you upload your guests emails (I chose one email for each couple or family I knew was coming together) and set a price limit per ride (as low as $5), and whether you're giving them one ride or round trip, and then a date and time window where the pass is good. You pay a service fee (mine was $12.50) and you're done! They set a max amount you'll be charged, email everyone their pass, and you only get charged for passes people use, 3-5 days after the event. We're doing an open bar so I'm glad no one has to worry about getting home safely.

So we did this for our wedding - for transportation - not for favors - we had favors for guests as well. We booked 30 passes with contributing $10/per ride so the max we would have spent was $300 for transportation. We sent the code to everyone we thought would use them... probably to about 20-30 people...we get our Uber bill about 10 days after the wedding...only $20! We were kind of bummed people didn't use more as we were trying to offer safe transportation.

I certainly wouldn't consider it a favor as we had a lot more people drive themselves than we anticipated. But then again favors are not required.

I'd turn down the offer and drive myself honestly. I mean, great for giving a choice, but I'm going to bet you'll get at least some declines from people who choose not to use Uber.

I have never heard of this and love the concept. FH and I chose a venue with a hotel because shuttle options were out of our price range. I think this is neat and I would rather have an Uber than waiting for a shuttle that may also be packed when I chose to leave.

Really cool idea. Not sure it's in our budget but I like the idea!

Love the idea -- I've done several weddings where shuttle buses were used, and the "fixed schedule" nature of buses always increases the risk for logistical problems. Giving everyone passes to use Uber at their own leisure is a great idea.

Just one thing to watch out for: Uber surge pricing. Sounds like Sarah did her homework regarding supply and demand at her wedding location... so this is more for others who might be considering Uber for their own weddings.

If you have a major event going on and all the Ubers in the area are tied-up, surge pricing could turn a $20 trip into a $30, $40, $50 trip or higher. Hopefully any surges are small and guests don't mind too much -- after all, you're still covering the first $20 or $25 (or whatever amount you choose). Those who use Uber a lot (especially in major cities) probably already understand how surge pricing works, so it shouldn't faze them. But people who are new to Uber -- or those who would have been willing to drive themselves anyway -- might get upset to learn this "free" trip is actually costing them money.

In the end, I guess it depends on your location and the average Uber prices between your reception and the most-likely hotels people might be using.

Yeah this definitely isn't a favor. Nice thing to do? Sure. But it's not a favor. I also wouldn't be ok with my email being shared around.
