UGH, really!? Who steals someone's identity to rent movies from redbox!!?

Katie, on January 11, 2012 at 11:12 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 16

They are only a dollar!! And the jokes on you, jerk! I'M BROKE! So I hope you enjoyed those movies because that's all you are getting from ME!

And someone tell me why my card got declined a couple of weeks ago because I used it out of town (at a bridal shop actually) and they thought it was suspicious but they didn't think it was even a little bit weird that I bought lunch in Orlando today and then rented a movie in Illinois!? really!?

I don't understand how they used my card there without actually physically having it... ugh.. oh well... it's just kind of inconvenient because I have been paying for my dress over the phone because the dress shop is in another town... I was going to pay it off on Friday but now I have to cancel my card and I know I wont have a new one by then so I will have to drive out there and pay cash... ugh... it's not that far lol but STILL!

My aunt works at a bank and she told me that anything anonymous (sp) is the easiest way to steal identity. like online gambling, online shopping, or things like redbox. my FH left his debit card in the ATM once...lol he just drove off without it. and i called her to get it cancelled after we realized it...approx 3 hours later. and someone had already tried to use it at redbox and an online gaming site.

But the thing is, I physically have my card... so I don't know how it was used at redbox because I am pretty sure you can't just type in the number... so weird...

I read somewhere that they make machines and when you swipe your card at a place like a gas pump it makes two records of your number, one for the gas station to charge and the other for the person that installed the device on it. Maybe that's how someone got a hold of your info? I don't know how they're using it but it's a possibility on how it's out there. :/

DH and I have stopped using redbox after someone managed to steal his information. They rented like five movies around the time of our wedding/honeymoon and never returned them. We actually would have never noticed until said person made separate $300 charges at Targets about an hour away from us. Then we noticed the $140 charge from redbox for those movies.

We reported it to our bank, had to file a police report, and eventually got all our money back. But have sworn off redbox to this day.

@Katie - DH had physical posession of his card as well. We're assuming someone used a scanning machine at the redbox to get his card info.

I just looked, you're right... when you reserve it you put your credit card info... they got 2 movies and kept each one for 2 days.... ugh.. I have to go to the bank tomorrow... I know this is going to be so much fun!

Just be prepared to do some paperwork. Our bank refunded the target charges right away but told us for the redbox charge we need to file a police report. We went online and filed the report, never heard anything back on it, but did get our money!
