Ugh, ring :(

Gen, on October 14, 2018 at 9:43 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 29
Despite already being sized down twice, my ring was STILL too big so we took it to get sized down again this weekend... only to discover that, apparently, this ring wasn’t meant to be sized down by more than 1 size. It started as a 7, and I’m a 5. The saleswoman also said that apparently since I have such thin fingers and large knuckles, a top-heavy ring like this was NOT meant for someone like me, and there’s basically no way to fix this because this ring just wasn’t meant to be a size 5, and the idiot who sold it to us didn’t say that!

At this point, I’ve spent literally multiple full days over the course of 10 months trying to make this darn ring work for my finger and turns out, it CANT. I’m so frustrated and angry beyond belief. My FH is going to the store tomorrow to try to get them to refund it since it’s their fault for selling us a ring that wasn’t meant for my size. Ugh.

Partly a rant, partly some advice, I’m going to need a whole new ring now, and I absolutely will not risk having another top-heavy ring. For those of you with thin fingers and large knuckles...... show me your rings that actually fit comfortably?? Trying to get an idea of styles that will actually fit me Smiley sad

See if they can do sizing globes or a horseshoe for your ring. It may cost a little for the extra metal necessary but it is made to help people in the same boat as you. It’s technically arthritic sizing. The helps to allow the ring to fit over your knuckle then fit more snug on the base of your finger when on. Let me know if you have other questions! I work at a jewelry store 😌 good luck with everything, hopefully they will get you taken care of.

    I'm a size 4 3/5 {thought I was a 5.5)

It still flops around when I'm cold because my fingers swell and shrink with the temperature (yesterday after walking around a park it was almost painfully tight) but overall it's a perfect fit

Thank you for the advice! They suggested sizing beads, but the thing is, the ring is very wide across my finger (3 stones) and it wasn’t meant to be sized down below a 6, so the part with diamonds is literally just too big for my finger... even if the sizing beads helped, the diamonds would still be wider than the width of my finger 🙄 so frustrating that they didn’t tell us this to begin with...

Ugh I’m so sorry they didn’t tell you everything before you bought it. I really hope they get you taken care of because that’s just not fair. You should be able to wear your ring and have it fit comfortably. I have small fingers also so I understand the struggle. I wish you the best of luck!

My friend has a super top heavy high sitting ring and she’s a 3.75 ring size. Like you said, the issue is your ring is a wide setting with the three diamonds. But you should be able to make any other solitaire setting work fine! If it has diamonds around the band, ask them about ordering a ring in your size rather than resizing. Same friend had hers sized from a 7 down to her size and then she lost band diamonds because it affected the integrity of the prongs. My fingers aren’t as small as yours, I wear a 6, but I do have much larger knuckles so tall sitting rings just spin on my finger because of the size they have to be to get over my knuckle if that makes sense. I was told the wider setting of my ring, wide as in it’s thicker than a normal single band ring, helps because it takes up more room on my finger and goes up to the thicker part right below the knuckle if that makes sense. They said adding the wedding band will help it feel even a bit snugger! I hope that all makes sense lol.

Why not just get beads put in it? That seems like an easy solution.

My FH bought me a 5.5 ring, had it sized to a 5 and it is still too big, so I ended up buying a ring size adjuster from amazon. it works for now as I am unsure I'd gain weight later.

Because the diamonds going across are still wider than the width of my finger, so it’ll still press into my other fingers and not actually truly fit

Thanks! I should have said 4 3/4. 4.5 was too small so I've had to get used to this.

I’m running into this same issue. My FH, bless his heart, bought my ring in a 6.5 because he thought that was my size. We had it sized down to a 4.25 and it’s still too big. It spins and spins and when I’m really unswollen, I can shake it off.

I’ve considered the sizing beads, but I think they are ugly and it seems a sin to do that to a $XX,XXX ring! My actual finger is a 3.75 but I need at least a 4 to get it over my knuckle. I think I’m gonna go with the 4 for now and hope that adding the band in a year will completely fix the problem.

Good luck! But it sounds like the 3 stones just aren’t going to work for you because of the width. I’ve attached my ring just for reference, but we small fingered girls seem to be doomed!

I have tiny tiny fingers. I'm a size four, but sometimes even that is too big! My ring is a simple diamond (.50 karat) and little diamonds on either side. It was my grandmother's engagement ring. It fits perfectly most of the time and I have no troubles with it! It comes off my hand too easily, which is how I know it's probably too big, but it doesn't slide off unless I pull it, and it doesn't flip upside-down.

I think I’m a size 6 and I have a simple one diamond on a band because my fingers are so long and skinny. I also struggle with my ring spinning because my knuckle is some much larger than my finger. It was suggested to my future husband that he get on stone and add a halo if he wanted to go “fancier” and anything else would look too big on my finger.

Exactly, my finger is just too small for 3 stones. The frustrating thing is that fh and I picked out the ring together and the guy at Jared said NOTHING about how the ring we picked could literally not be sized to fit my finger. And I’ve been back about 6 times since then with problems with it not fitting, and it took THIS LONG for someone to tell me “oh yeah that ring is never going to fit your finger.” Ugh. 😠

My FH is literally taking a half day from work today so he can go back to the store and try to get a refund so he can get me a new ring elsewhere because we’re so annoyed at them at this point. I want to just get a simple band with a single solitaire diamond... seems more “me” anyway, and hopefully will actually fit on my finger 🙄

That’s a really smart idea. That’s what I want to get at this point too. I’m so not a jewelry person anyway, I feel like the simpler the better

I know exactly how you feel! FH bought a size 7 and asked them specifically "can you size this to a 4?" and they said yes.

I AM A 3.5 AND THEY SAID THE LOWEST THEY COULD GO WAS A 5!!!!

I asked them 8 times "so what can we do, whats a solution, what are our options?" and they just looked at us stupidly and kept saying "well we can send it out and see but they told me on the phone they cant" Sending it out takes two weeks!!! Two weeks just to "see" if they even could???

I was livid. I still am (clearly). but i suggested they go as small as they could and add bumps to help it fit. The ring is now a 4.5 (i think?) with bumps making it about a 4.

Considering i lost a promise ring size 4 before, this is no good.

We went to a different Kay Jewelers on vacation, and found out that they could have:

Custom ordered it in my size (regardless of it being a clearance piece)

or added a bar, which would have fit so much better than these stupid bumps, Which IIIIII suggested, and they didn't even offer anything (bumps or bar) as a solution.

My experience was so poor and when i finally get my attitude about it under control, i will be going back to get what i need and want as a customer.

So there's my mini rant too to hopefully make you feel better.

I’m so sorry that happened to you! Glad it’s not just me with a problem like this :/ they did offer to put bumps in it for me but it’s still going to be too big so that only partially helps. And I know I’m not going to want to wear it if it doesn’t actually feel like it fits. I just want a ring that fits to begin with, ugh. Hopefully my FH will be able to return it and we’ll get one that’s suited to me

We got my rings at Jared, when we bought my engagement ring I was a size 5 and now I'm a 4.25 (who knew you lose weight in your fingers?!). I took my ring to a local jeweler who did the initial size down from 5 to 4.5, but I lost more weight and he said definitely don't size it again. Luckily my wedding band is a 4.25 (which they gave us a hard time about doing even though we asked upon purchasing if it could be done) and that helps make my engagement ring a little tighter from sitting higher up on my finger, but I still have one of the plastic ring guards from Amazon to keep it from sliding off. Not ideal, but it works and you can't see it!
