Ugly columns - decor ideas?

Lauren, on September 5, 2019 at 2:31 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 11
Hi all! We are getting married in our dream venue (an aquarium!), but the reception room has these intrusive columns.

There are 4 columns.Ugly columns - decor ideas? 1

Our theme is winter beach (a rocky coast of Maine type of thing). We will be decorating with seashells, pine sprigs, and pebbles. My partner thinks that fake pine garland will look tacky and real pine garland is out of our price range. Does anyone have ideas on how to cover up, glammify or incorporate these pillars into our theme?

Thanks in advance!

Is there any way you can wrap rope around the bottom like you would see at a marina? Then they would at least look purposeful.

I also suggested something like that, and it was shot down because my partner thought it would look like a tacky seafood chain restaurant ¯\_(?)_/¯ Thanks for the thought though!

I would actually NOT decorate or it would draw more attention to them. If you play up blues, the fabulous mural will have more attention. And candles on the table (tall modern ones) would look great in that modern space and add a beautiful glow! You can use sand/shells in the vase with the candle, or just a few shells outside the vase leaning against it.

What about a softer flowy fabric around them?
Or maybe some small little pines around the bases of them?
I found these other 2 ideas that could be cute, you could hand seashells instead of ornaments?

Chandra’s draping photos above are a great option! Very pretty!

Agreed. You notice them so much bc the room is empty... You really really won't notice that much.

The draping might work but doesn't seem to go with your theme much.

Maybe large floor vase with sand and pepples and like pine sticking out of it? I would honestly leave them alone.

I say embrace the columns, I like them! Maybe get those removable hooks and hang pictures of you and your fiancé - Maybe add some lights as well, like white Christmas lights would be pretty. Smiley smile

I’m having the same problem. The problem is we can’t tack anything to the post. 🤔

Navy organza wrapped around them at the top might help them dissappear visually into the mural. It will also look on theme to do robe netting, strings of pearls and shells (find someone with a diamond bit to drill small holes for hanging) on fishing wire could also help. I would use a variety of methods. with 4 different poles, you might also be able to alter them based on the distance from the mural (i.e. the ones closest to the mural have the blue organza and pearls, then mix in shells and maybe some sort of sand color instead of the navy and the last one or two go to a combination of pine sprigs and pebbles glued to a green (pine), lt. brown (pebble) or lt blue (sky) sheer fabric. Personally, I would use sheer cloth on all and change the color. Its amazing what you can do with a glue gun.

Oh and this way you can use fishing line to attach at the top incase your venue has rules about not using tacks or other such devices from which to hand stuff.
