@Uber Dami if you can't find a baker that will make the cake, how about getting an actual hellraiser puzzle box and using it as a cake topper?

Also, the designs on the side reminded me of custom-printed chocolates. Maybe you could take one of the sides and ask a chocolate maker to print the design in gold on one side of a solid chocolate?

I just looked up the box and i think that you are correct with that the baker just didn't want to make it. there are many ways to create the feel of the patterns on the box rather than copying it directly that would have given you the look you wanted and the ambiguity that the baker needed to cover their butt.

good luck! i think you can find someone to do it for you.

Okay, so sorry... I don't actually have any suggestions about your cake, but did you say that Clive barker is DYING?! I don't know much about him, but I'm obsessed with his Abarat books and that makes me very sad! He's such an excellent author I hope he gets to see his works through and finished before he passes :/

Vc we have a collection of puzzlebox replicas at home, it just would seem so blah to have a boring cake and a puzzlebox topper. as for the chocolate idea, we tried that route and the price was insane so its a no go.

thanks surfer, im still contacting a ton of bakers and keeping my fingers crossed

I was a little worried about mine because we're using the VW symbol on our cake. However, I figured my cake baker would be able to tell me if it was copyright infringement and know the legalise surrounding using copyrighted images/trademarks/characters/etc. Hopefully, you'll find a great baker who can do your cake as you want it.

I understand what you mean, but I was thinking maybe she just doesn't know how to make a cake like that. And instead of her simply saying "I cant make a cake like that, sorry." she made up an excuse.

I understand you are having a difficult time finding people to cooperate with your style, but it seems like you have had your style for quite some time, I would think you'd be used to it.

Also, maybe she has some religious beliefs that are against yours? I don't know, anything is a possibility in this world today.

I am a baker.. they can do the cake but just can't call it "hell raiser puzzle box " cake.. Juat like the other bakers call it a pink princess (cinderella) or yellow princess ( belle) purple dinosaur ( barney)

they probably just didn't have the skill to make it.

Well it's good that he's in good spirits! As a writer myself I would be so sad if I didn't get to finish writing a series! I'll have to start reading his other stuff now.

Allison the baker wouldnt know my religious beliefs lol we never got into a religious conversation. and just because im used to things being a little tough because of the way i choose to live doesnt mean i cant vent once in a while or laugh at what find to be ridiculousness.

tania, fh is contacting clive barkers management to see if we can get the go ahead, clive barker did the original sketch of the puzzlebox despite another designer making the movie set box, and he celebrates his fans incorporating his art and words into their own art and on their bodies so i dont see him saying no and sending the cake police after us lol

Okay, another question is did you tell the baker you want that EXACT cake? maybe it would be better if you said you want something "along these lines" with a photo. Maybe they don't want to take the original bakers ideas.

Also, nobody said you couldn't vent or laugh at it. This is a forum.

I'm Just trying to throw out some different opinions. Because this is a forum.

We have run into this before. My MOH wanted a batman gender reveal cake from hyvee since that's where she got her batman groom's cake 2 years prior. They refused due to copyright and licensing issues. From what the said someone made a big deal out of if and they started cracking down more.

ETA: this could be a completely different situation though and they could very easily just not know how to do that and not want to own up to it.

I sent three reference pictures for what we want the cake to look like, i said in the email we'd like our cake to look like the puzzle box from hellraiser...and then we got the rather short yet comical in my eyes shut down reply

Jaklyn its so odd to me, its just a friggin cake.....at this rate i should just turn down the next client who comes into the tattoo shop and asks for a portrait of some friggin doctor who character or a cartoon character. then it'd leave me with stupid pinterest feathers, infinity symbols and stupid hearts and butterflies to tattoo and that would SUCK! lol

I'm not entirely sure why someone trying to cover their ass in case of a lawsuit is a joke - for what it's worth - A lot of cakes and kits can be bought with their rights. i.e. disney can sell cake toppers or decorating sets with frozen or whatever else then the cake can be made. In high school I decorated cakes and we would buy MLB & NHL kits to make those cakes, but wouldn't attempt to make our own, despite how easy it would be to frost a Chicago Bear logo and call it a day. Everyone has given you good advice how to proceed though, I just find it a little interesting that you seem to think this is a joke, while also trying to trick other vendors out of money...I think that maybe you bring a lot of this vendor stress on yourself.

Emmy first off, we dont like each other and you take every damn thing on here far too seriously, you're like the "do a wedding proper or else" hall monitor and its tiring. i dont think lawsuits are funny, but creating a cake, come on now....if they dont post the picture of it, guess what, no lawsuit, who would know? so are you also saying if someone gets a tattoo of a copyrighted image (which soooo many people do) they should be sued as well?

@Uber Dami could you ask her (or any baker, I guess) to simply make a square cake of certain dimensions, and then order the "sides" from here?

    http://www.icingimages.com/edible-cake-picture

Your FH could design something similar but not equal to the sides of the puzzle box to avoid any copyright infringement issues.
