    Uber Dami,

You never know who is going to take you to court.

There is a pizza place in South Philly. Steam 'Em Up. Their picture is an old time mob guy holding a submarine sandwich instead of a sub-machine gun. You can easily see the play on words. Their food was good and they were a success. The opened 3 additional locations.

The inventor of Steak Umms processed frozen meat sued the owner. It took 3 years and went all the way to Federal Court for Steam Ummms to lose the suit. The amount of money spent defending a name is incredible. He now has his original store only. He's probably lucky to have that one.

    As for the cakes:

The thing is that those rules apply to everything else too. Kids can't get a Batman cake unless they get it from a grocery store that has the license. The last link I posted talks to a baker who got sued by the University of Arkansas for doing cakes supporting them. Who knew they had copyright on the words “University of Arkansas,” “Arkansas Razorbacks,” “Arkansas” and “Hogs,” and the cheer “Wooo Pig Sooie!”?

I know it seems silly. Unfortunately it's not. It's not just weddings, it's everywhere.

Well, if i cant find a baker, then screw having a cake.....seriously, there is no other design we want, nothing else appeals to us it was the first idea we had when we started planning and i really dont want a plain blah cake with flowers on it, i hate flowers

I think the edible sheet should work. When we were thinking of having cookies as wedding favours we were going to order wafer sheets with specific images and place them on homemade cookies (but then we learned that I can't bake cookies lol). I bet there's edible sheet or edible printed wafers somewhere around you, and you don't need to tell them you were inspired by the Hellraiser puzzle box, just say it's a design created and owned by FH, so they would have to print it.

Vc its just frustrating, im worried a printed sheet will look kinda cheesy with the design we're going for. im just going to wait for the other bakeries to get back to us and if they say no, we'll just not have a cake....we cut out a lot of things in the wedding already so cutting out having a cake will just be another thing we dont have. we have plenty of other nice things for the wedding, a cake isnt a big deal in the end if its going to be impossible to get the one we really want. thank you for your idea though Smiley smile

You don't have to have flowers. It doesn't have to be traditional. It does have to be something they won't lose their business over. There is no other design your FH has created that will work? What about a square cake. 2 sides with the box like design but the other 2 sides turn into something with skulls or candelabra designs to bring in your table decor to it? Since you are turning it into something very different, that might work. It sucks that you are disappointed, but maybe this means thinking further out of the box.

I went up home (country, middle of nowhere). Looked for a bear skull for you, but didn't see one this time. My aunt had a full deer skeleton and a full turtle skeleton with the shell that she found on her property. She collects everything she finds.

How about a cake inspired by the head of Pinhead? all white (or silver?) with a marked grid and silver toothpicks?

If it makes you feel better, we won't have the cake we wanted Smiley tongue we couldn't afford a cake at all, lol

Vc maybe, i just really want the cake to look dark and intricate and avoid it coming off cheesy or halloweeny. its a fine line hahaha. ill see what fh can come up with, he has a marked grid pinhead style sculpture he made, maybe we can modify it into something that would look dark and elegant on a cake.

Uber Dami Attitude is everything. Chill a little.

And a baker--or any other person in business--has a legal right to refuse to make a cake or anything else on the basis of copyright/trademark laws. Always.

Uber Dami, I might have a suggestion. Since you are a tattoo artist, I can assume you draw well and alter/create ideas for your clients all the time. Is there a way you can redesign your cake so it still gives the feel you want and draw it for a baker and not call it by a specific name at all? That way there isn't copyright. I'm not familiar with Hellraiser, but maybe if you do it that way you can still get the cake you want.

My other suggestion is buy a hellraiser puzzle box centerpiece for your table at the reception OR as your "Guestbook" and have people sign in with silver sharpie and then your cake could be different sweets if you prefer that over cake. Good luck!

Oh and off topic a bit but I see you are in CT! What part? I'm in the Danbury area but I'd love to see your portfolio or website because I'm looking for a tattoo artist in CT for a piece I want Smiley smile

First the problem was florists gouging you with wedding prices, now it's bakers refusing to break copyright laws for you? I'm sensing a theme here...

For the love of all that is holy, you claim to be "for copyright laws", but in the same breath you are making a big joke over a baker who doesn't want to break them. You are NOT for copyright laws if you only choose to use them if and when it suits you. In fact, you obviously miss the point of copyright altogether. It's not about "just a cake", it's about an entity who came up with a good idea, took the time and money to copyright it, and wants to make damn sure that no one uses or misuses their brand without their permission. If everyone did whatever the hell they wanted, it would be similar to the issues the music industry is facing today, with widespread piracy.

Now I'm not saying that the baker should be jailed or fined for making a cake like this. But she has the right to refuse you, and has a valid reason for it. You don't get to call the shots here - the entity who owns the copyright does. And if you think I'm taking it way too seriously - how would you feel if someone used your creation publicly in whatever way they wanted without your permission?

It's not about "doing a wedding proper(ly)", it's about giving credit where credit is due. Although looking at this, as well as our earlier discussion about vendor compensation, that little piece of wisdom continues to be foreign to you...

And for the record, I know we don't like each other (understatement galore), and you are probably going to ignore this, but I hope at least some of it sinks in.
