Uneven bride and groom party

Nicole, on September 18, 2023 at 5:35 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 5

Even though we're having an extremely small wedding, with upwards of only 15 guests, possibly 20 but, that's a stretch, I still have multiple close friends in my bridal party. I have two of my closest friends currently as bridesmaids, and I've discussed with two more friends the possibility of them becoming bridesmaids. My fiancé, on the other hand, has only one close friend he wants to be in his party, and we've discussed that friend being our officiant. What do I do in this situation? He doesn't have family members who could step in, and neither do I. Is it okay to only have my party stand at the altar if he has no one on his side, or is that tacky? Should I ask my bridal party to not stand at the altar with me? Any advice would be really helpful, thank you all!

The numbers do not have to be even. This issue comes up a lot. Trust me, it will barely be noticable. Don't add stress for yourself by trying to figure out who to add or remove.

Typically sides don’t have to be even, but if you have 4 bridesmaids and 20 guests, that’s about 20% of your guest list standing at the altar with you. That might seem a little overwhelming.

Definitely side’s don’t have to be even. Given your current numbers, though, I would just have 2 bridesmaids. Your other 2 friends could have special roles but not stand at the altar with you. Nonetheless, it is up to you and your groom.

Sides definitely do not have to be even, and it's very common for them not to be. However, since you are having such a small, intimate wedding, I would either:

    A. Stick with the 2 bridesmaids you have, or

    B. Add the other 2 bridesmaids, but have them sit in the front row after they walk down the aisle.

If you stick with the 2 BMs and have them stand at the alter during the ceremony, you could always have them walk down the aisle together, then one stand on your side and one stand on the grooms side.

I would say go for as many bridesmaids as you want, but if your fiancé's friend is officiating, I would have the bridesmaids sit during the ceremony. You could always have two of them grab the officiant when you recess and have the other two follow, or something like that.
