Unexpected Venue Renovations- Royal Ambassador (caledon, On)

Andrea, on August 22, 2023 at 11:25 AM Posted in Planning 0 1

I'm wondering if any brides have had experience with finding out that their venue is undergoing renovations? My wedding is not until May and I believe the renovations are in the winter, so I think it could be fine- maybe even great, who doesn't like an upgrade? I'm trying REALLY hard to be positive about this.

I'm a bit frustrated because I booked this venue a year ago and I didn't hear anything about the renovations, in fact I actually heard about it from my decorator. I called the venue, and they confirmed that it's true, I'm still waiting on actual details of timelines and what they are going to do. I'm holding out hope that it will look really nice (because why would they pay to make it look bad), but my decorator mentioned they are repainting the venue space I booked white... which frankly I don't love. I really didn't want a bleak white space, I actually specifically picked this venue because it looks like an older, vintage building... kind of Bridgerton-esque!

Essentially, I'm trying to stay positive, but I'd love to know from other brides if they have suggestions on managing this? My worst fear is that the renovations will still be going on, and frankly my interactions with planning the wedding and the venue are not... the best, so I don't get the sense they will care.

If they are changing the look of the venue, I would definitely ask and see if they have any mock-ups they are willing to share with you so you know exactly what it will look like. I would also ask them when specifically they think the renovations will be done and what their plan is if the work gets delayed (as often happens with construction projects). I actually think it’s a big deal if they’re changing the look because you’ve likely been planning your theme/color scheme/formality/etc to match what the space already looks like. I would also take any mock-ups you get back to your decorator to make sure that she can still get a look that you like. Maybe she already has a copy since she told you about the white paint? Since it’s less than a year, it’ll be tough to line up a different venue now, even if they give your deposit back. So by far the easiest solution would be to go back to your decorator and say you know the look I’m going for, so how will you do that in this space? I would also be politely assertive with the venue if you’re not happy with their responses and how they handled this in the first place (not even telling you), so that maybe they will at least offer something to smooth things over. My venue is different in that it has many locations to choose from, but the space we booked for our welcome party will now be under renovation so they had to move us somewhere else. They gave us a discount off our booking fee (we didn’t ask; they just offered when they called to let us know). This isn’t guaranteed, but they should not want your negative reviews when everything is said and done, so maybe they’ll be willing to work with you a bit. I would also try to connect with other couples getting married there so you know how others are handling it.
