Unique Photographer Situation - How do i tip??

Jessica, on June 3, 2019 at 8:18 AM Posted in Planning 0 6

Okay so we hired a photographer that we loved - we did engagement pictures with her even though we had done professional pictures a year prior because we wanted to get to know her better and get comfortable. Overall we felt very comfortable being photographed by her - something we felt was very important for our wedding day.

Anyway, she can no longer be there for the wedding - she is offering a substitute main shooter - I looked at her work and it is INCREDIBLE - dare I say even better than our main photographer. So this other photographer would shoot the wedding and the original one would still manage the shot list, do all the editing, any albums, etc. The only reason I was okay with all this is because the substitute photographer is phenomenal - her base prices start at almost double what we are paying.

Anyway, we will also have a second shooter (they are usually less experienced, we are fine with that). How do I tip now that I have this situation?? Gah!

I would tip one amount all together to the main photographer the day of. Her, your original photographer, and the second shooter can decide how to split it up.

Does your original photographer own her business? If so, technically you don't need to tip her.

Otherwise, what were you thinking of tipping the original photographer? I'd probably split it 70/30 or 60/40, with the new photographer getting the larger portion and your original photog getting the smaller amount once you see the final product. I wouldn't give the main photog the full amount and expect her to split it because it's possible she may think it's all for her.

Yes, she owns her own! Though the two shooters would be working for her.

I would probably give the two shooters a tip in person at the wedding since they won't be doing any of the editing afterwards. After you receive your photos from the main photographer, I would send her a thank you note and it's up to you to include a tip or not at that point. I would probably just decide what you want your total tip to be and split it two or three ways depending on if you would like to tip the main photographer (I personally would give her some kind of tip).

    Professional planner here-

Give the tip to whoever the main shooter is on the day of the wedding. It is their responsibility to portion it out fairly after that.

Ok thank you - So do I tip more than I normally would because I'm now dealing with 3 people instead of 2? Even if it's the main photographer's fault?
