Unity Candle Outdoors

Christina, on October 11, 2018 at 11:50 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 1 9
So as much as I love the unity candle idea I had axed it due to our ceremony being outside. My future hubby, on the other hand, is really wanting it. I have tried to tell him it won't work because the candles will blow out but he is insistent. Any thoughts or suggestions, or alternatives to how we can pull this off? Thanks!

I've seen outdoor wedding with unity candles. It worked out fine. Have you thought about unity sand? It serves the same purpose and it shouldn't blow away as easily as a flame

I am insisting on candles too. Some people have told me they won’t blow out but just in case I’m going to order some glass covers

Hi Christina!! Like Nafisah said, a unity candle can work so long as it's not super windy outside. It should at least be able to remain lit for a couple minutes.

But, I think it would be safer to offer some alternative unity ceremonies to your FH, just to be on the safer side of things. There are a couple of good ideas in the 7 Wedding Unity Ceremony Ideas, my favorite being the tree planting if you're having an outdoor ceremony. Smiley smile

Have you asked why your FH is insistent about a unity candle? Or is he insistent on the unity ceremony in general?

You can place the candle in a cylinder vase. Use a long lighter (like for the grill) to light it. This will keep the wind from blowing out the flame.

Yep, I've seen this. Hurricane vases for each of the candles!

Could you get tall glasses to put the candles in so the wind doesn't get to them?

The glass chimneys for hurricane lamps work fine. You need not use the lamp base, any wider candle on a decorative plate or bowl, fixed there with a few drops melted wax will do. Any inexpensive pressed glass, including 12 oz glass or inexpensive pressed glass jelly jar will fo. The ffacets of the glass act like prisms and so a candle that is only 2-3" in the bottom, like a long burning votive, will cast lots of light all around. Use fireplace matches, on a 6-8" stick with burning tip. I have also seen unity candles done outside with a little sand in the bottom of a $7-10 terrarium gl e with a 4-5 inch opening on top. Easy to reach in large opening to low candle, and maybe about 5 inches between candle top and glass bowl top, protection from wind. Get a 2-4 hour candle, as with breeze that will burn down twice as fast.

If it makes you feel any better, I just went to an indoor wedding where they wouldn't stay lit, Lol.

We are getting married on the beach, so it's not an option for us. We opted for a wine ceremony instead. Check around...there are lots of unity alternatives.
