Unity Candle, Sand, or nothing?

MrsBurns, on March 2, 2016 at 10:25 AM Posted in Planning 0 54

We are planning on doing the lighting of the candles at our wedding ceremony. I've seen some people represent unity with the sand as well. Do any of you plan on doing lighting of candles or something else to represent your unity?

We are doing a unity braid. I think its a fun twist (and less messy) than the sand. Our wedding is at the beach, so it fit into my theme also.

Unity cross, tree/plant watering, salt covenant, you have plenty of options.

We skipped it. Even the alternative options felt a little forced to us.

Candles for sure. It's classic and the church even has a beautiful brass unity candle holder for us to use. We love the symbolism of our mothers lighting the family candles at the beginning of the ceremony and us using those to light our own family candle together. Our coordinator and her husband relight theirs every year on their anniversary, and 22 years later, she says she still gets teary when it's lit. They have some beautiful candle designs on Etsy too!

I really like the idea of the love letter & wine box ceremony, which I think we will be doing.

Here is the gist of it:

We're doing a unity shot of tequila. Does that count?

To be honest, I find the idea of 'unity' anything within the ceremony a little forced. Isn't the point that the whole ceremony is a celebration of unity - do we really need an awkwardly-lit candle or messy sand to drive the point home?

I do like the idea of watering a tree together just because we love gardening...but aside from veggies we don't have a great track record of keeping plants alive, and what kind of symbolism would it be to have the wedding tree DIE by our second anniversary?

We are doing a unity cross! I love the meaning behind the unity cross! Plus, we will be moving a million times during our marriage and I was worried about candles and sand becoming ruined

If you are incorporating religion into your ceremony, you could do a unity cross. I really liked ours and the way our pastor described the meaning during the ceremony. It also looks nice in our home Smiley smile

No offense to anyone electing to perform a unity ceremony, but it just isn't for my fiance and I. We are very much short, sweet, get to the point kind of people and believe that our ceremony in of itself is proper enough unity for us. I am taking the 5 minutes we would have spent on a unity ritual and instead am spending it laughing, dancing, and having a good time at my reception. Everyone has their own deal so just choose what is best for you and your FH Smiley smile

    We're skipping.

Our "unity" thing is a clock I found. When we say "I do" after the vows, our minister is going to set the clock to that time to represent the moment we committed to this marriage.
