Unity Candle, Sand, or nothing?

We are planning on doing the lighting of the candles at our wedding ceremony. I've seen some people represent unity with the sand as well. Do any of you plan on doing lighting of candles or something else to represent your unity?

I"m doing a lot of tequila sharings and toasts and a lot of glass sharings, replacing the sand. Handfastings have always been popular with our couples, as have chocolate and sushi sharings. But the ritual needs to have some symbolism to you.

We aren't doing anything special... We felt like getting married and exchange rings pretty much unified us!

We skipped it. None of those 'unity' ceremonies had much meaning to either one of us, and I didn't know what to do with a jar/vase of sand afterwards. Do you just display it on your china cabinet forever?

Yes - I've always loved the symbolic unity candle.

We're skipping it too. Trying to save money and FH wasn't too keen on any of it.

We're doing a handfasting. I plan on knitting the cords myself, and FH is going to help me by adding a tassle to the end.

We are looking into the glass ceremony. We have a local glass blower and we've made cool pieces there before. I'm thinking at the ceremony we'll pour our separate pieces together then make something with it later.

We are doing a simple hand unity ritual/reading. It was the most personal for us, the others felt forced.

We're skipping that. I never liked the unity candle, most weddings I've been to recently have sand. It just doesn't feel necessary to me for our wedding.

We are combining our self designed heraldry. We wanted to make/do a physical representation of the joining of two families.

Prior to wedding a wine tasting date where we will pick a bottle. I customized a wine box. During the ceremony we are going to place a love letter to each other in that wine box. With the wine we picked, we plan to share the bottle and read the letters on our 1 year anniversary. Not sure how original this is but its special for us.

We haven't fully decided yet - but I think we are doing Lovelocks.

We want to do a Fisherman's Knot. We tie two ropes in a fisherman's knot as our minister explains that it is the strongest knot that can be tied. It gets stronger over time and with added pressure.
