UNITY SAND

Amber, on October 2, 2011 at 12:05 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 13

We doing unity sand instead of the candle. But i don't know how much sand i will need?? Using a mason jar as our holder. will 1lb of ea color do fine??? 3 colors of sand.. THANKS! Unsure if we will be using a lot of 1 color or not. 1 color may be used just as the base (bottom color) OR our kids will be participating. His kids are not as outgoing infront of crowds like my duahgter is. My daughter would do the sand in a heart beat but his kids...ehhh...not sure. We have to talk to them and find out. But will still be doing 3 colors either way. THANKS!!

A pound is WAY enough; of course, it depends on how many colors you use and how big that jar is....

My plan is to get my jars (I found some on etsy.) And then buy the sand and practice (with one color)!! That way I can see exactly how much it'll take to fill our unity sand vase AND if we practice we'll know how fast the sand pours.

We just watched a wedding video where you can hear the bride telling the groom to "slow down! slow down!"

We did the unity sand and all poured it in together. 4 colors. I was worried that it wouldn't look good when it mixed, but it came out great. All the colors came out in different areas, making it look artsy instead of dumped. I did get a pound of sand for each color and it was way too much.

Honestly I would just buy it. If you use coupons you can pay 2-3 dollars per color and not have to worry about making it or supplies and what not.

For my sand I bought a container that has 1.5 lbs for me and my FHs is a 5 lbs aquarium sand bag and I know that's a lot but it was less expensive than buying the "wedding sand" online.

We also did the sand ceremony and I would strongly suggest doing a run through. We did our run through and needed to do it more than once. I ordered sand from amazon and didn't use half of the bag in each contanier. How much you need will really just depend on the size of the container it's going in.

Shanice, would you care to share the link to your vendor.

I've been looking for colored sand but the ones I found are so expensive, if not the cheaping cost is very high.

@Amber, I've also been told that 1lb each should be enough depending on the type of container you're using to store the mixed sand and how high you want it to be.

We are using a mason jar, so quart size. I think I'm going to put white on the bottom and then we are using cream color and brown sand. Yea i think we should get some practice sand. hehehe!

I just bought a Deco Bloc from Michaels to use as our container. I'll put the link here- the image shows a pink flower in there but that's just an example of what you could do, the flower does not come with the empty container.

Unfortunately the Best Man picked this up for me so I'm not sure of the price; I think it was under $20 and of course I would have used a coupon.

I got my sand super-cheap on Amazon. 1lb of each color (2 colors) was WAY too much...Once we had the sand and the unity set, I did as Meghan said and tested how much sand to use. Turned out that we needed slightly more of each color than fit in each of the jars that came with the set, but we just added the difference together that night.

OMG I just realized we don't have a pic of the filled jar! I will have to fix that when I get home, but here is the set before the ceremony.

@ Patricia, I bought my colored sand at Michaels, the color is pink and I used a 50% off coupon so it was 1.25 for a 1.50lb container (I bought the one from the kids section). And for FH's I bought aquarium sand from Petco because it was the only reasonable price I could find for that color, I spent 4.99 for a 5lb bag (smallest they had).

I only used two colors. I bought 4 lbs of each color from Michaels, but I used a shadow box as my container... http://genevieveswedding.blogspot.com/2010/08/unity-sand-ceremony.html
