Unity shots

Sydney, on March 31, 2022 at 1:27 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 10
I want to be no traditional and do unity shots of tequila. But I’m worried that some guest won’t like it or be upset that we have liquor at our wedding due to children being there. As far as our bar goes, we are wine and beer and limiting each drink to insure safety of those driving themselves home. But my partner and I originally decided to get married while we were having a good time drinking, well, tequila. That was the night we realized we couldn’t live without one another and we’re so in love and wanted to become one. What do you guys think?

I love the idea! It's different and super personal for you guys! I've seen unity ceremonies involving alcohol, and how they're received tends to boil down to a) whether there's some kind of significance b) the venue and c) guests' general opinions about alcohol. If people are just doing something with alcohol for funsies, that tends to be taken differently than if there is some kind of story behind it (like what you guys have). I'd suggest having your officiant lead into the ceremony with the story about the significance. Next, the venue, can also make a difference since you probably wouldn't want to be doing shots at an uber conservative church. Finally, if the people in attendance are generally more accepting of alcohol, then the ceremony tends to be received better.

It's none of their business is it - if that's what you want, then go for it. Any guest who has a problem with it must be wildly conservative...here in Europe it's common for children (like, under 10)to to try their first wine at family parties - and I think our less extreme attitude towards alcohol encourages a more sensible adult relationship with it in general.

In any case, if this is in church everyone is already drinking wine on a Sunday morning, and no one bats an eyelid Smiley winking

The ceremony is for you and fiancé. If someone is offended by that, that is on them. It’s not like you are doing something super offensive (fill in the blank atrocity) during the ceremony. However it could be confusing for guests who think there is tequila served at the reception. Not everyone is a fan of beer/wine so they may be looking for the tequila instead. Don’t have anything that you wouldn’t offer your guests as well.

It is your wedding. Do what makes you happy and the majority of weddings have alcohol and if they choose to bring a child and they have a issue with that, that is on them.

Follow your bliss! My sister and her husband did a Jell-O shot toast instead of a champagne toast and even my 95 year old grandmother got in on it. If you have judgmental guest, that's their burden, not yours.

I would go with it. It sounds like a beautiful way to celebrate your love and your special day and if that's how you want to do it then go for it! I love non-traditional ways of doing things.
