Unreasonable dress budget?

Kat, on May 28, 2018 at 9:37 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 46
Will it be completely impossible for me to find my wedding gown and have it altered, all for under $850? This is what I’ve budgeted, and I really don’t feel good about spending much more on something I’ll wear once. I’ve had multiple friends laugh at the idea, saying alterations alone will be $500 and I’ll never be able to do it. FH and I are having a fairly expensive wedding (average I think, for our area, but not a small budget by any means), but we’re foodies and love a good party, and so we decided to dedicate the bulk of our budget to an amazing caterer and premium open bar. We agreed that things like my gown, flowers, decor are lower priority in the budget (and I already found an amazingly low priced florist with great reviews).

I guess I’m just looking for encouragement from ladies that found their dream dress on a budget (and recommendations for where). AND for someone to tell me that I’m not doing things completely wrong...😕

I bought my dress on a website called The Real Real for $350. From what I understand alterations for bridal gowns are somewhere between $350-500. So I don't see why you couldn't' t stay within that budget! Granted, my dress is not a ballgown or lace or blingy. But I know there are sites like Oncewed and preownedweddingdress.com that sell already worn gowns at a fraction of the price. Good luck!

It is possible! Look everywhere. Dress resale online, consignment shops, Facebook marketplace, and David’s bridal has many options that are less than that. I found a seamstress that comes highly recommended but works out of her house instead of at a big store like David’s. She worked miracles for $266.

I'll be honest, it will be tough. Keep an eye out for David's $99 sale. Look at clearance dresses at bridal stores. Check out consignment stores or second hand dress sites. Also look at bridesmaids dresses that would look good as a wedding dress or formals that would also work. As for alterations, choose a dress that will be cheaper to alter. For example, if you find that dresses need to be shortened, choose a dress with a plain hem, not one with lace at the hem. In my experience, dresses without a lot of detail (lace, beading, etc) are less expensive to alter. Find a local alterations store. They typically do better work at cheaper prices.

It is definitely possible! Check out CocoMelody for your gown. My friend got hers there and it was absolutely stunning! They have an actual store in LA (not sure where you are) but can make the dress to your measurements. I had legit dress regret and if I would have known about the site before I went dress shopping I would have ordered from them. If you search the forums here I believe I have seen all rave reviews. Good luck!

You can do it. The place where I bought my dress is having a sale now. They have marked some dresses down to $750. I only paid $78 for alterations. Good luck to you!

Just ordered my dress from ModCloth for less than $100. Now, it's informal and I expect even drastic alterations will be less than $150 but it is definitely a wedding dress.
Mention your budget when you shop. I think you'll be surprised. I mean, you're not going to be able to shop at a designer boutique but I think it's within reason.

I guess it all depends on what you're looking for and where you live. I found my dress for $449 and I won't need any alterations. The dress fits like a glove. Alternatively, I have a friend who looked for goddess costumes on Amazon, found one she liked, then got married in it. You wouldn't know that it wasnt a wedding dress if she hadnt told you. Cost her $40-$50.

My budget was $700 and I’ll be sticking to it... my dress was $500 from David’s bridal and alterations will be around $150 Smiley smile depends what you all want done to your dress and where you buy it... I couldn’t justify more for one day either

OH YES YOU CAN!! Not sure what area you live in but check for any bridal consignment stores. I had been looking all online because I assumed there were none in my area… Lo and behold, I found a fantastic place with a huge inventory and incredible prices ($350 average). I can’t speak to alterations but as long as you have the time to search I know you can find something reasonable. I’m sorry, but if anyone tells you that finding an affordable wedding dress is impossible, that is only based on their traditional experience and there are a whole slew of us who have had success elsewhere because we would never pay upwards of $2000+ for a gown! Good luck! I know you’ll find what you’re looking for! And if you’re not too far from Michigan, “Between Brides” is the name of the shop I found mine at.

Yes it’s possible, but if you have big dreams for a dream wedding gown, probably not.

Cocomedlys has cheap gowns but I personally don’t have experience with them.

davids bridal has gowns at/around $500- often they have sales going. This weekend thet have $75 dollars off if you spend $500 (like on a gown) but typically the sale is $50 off around $500-$700 or $75 off $800-$1000 or $100 off $1,000+ (this is my rough guesstimate, each dress is different)

this all really depends on the type of gown you want if it’s going to be on the lower end of your budget. Sheath fit? Typically cheaper. Lace over bling? Cheaper.

Things that add $$- bling, ball gowns, cathedral veils

good luck! I work at dB so if you have any questions lfeel free to ask! But there are other places in sure you can find cheap dresses in!! I would budget $200-300 for alterations!

Thank you all! This has been so helpful. CocoMelody looks awesome, I found a gorgeous gown for $400 I’m tempted to order right now!! You’ve all made me feel way better. I’m definitely not looking for bling or a ballgown - just a fairly simple, lace mermaid gown with a sweetheart neckline. I think I can do this!!

Yay! Just be sure to measure well...and they are great with email, so you can always ask questions, express concerns, etc. I was seriously looking at a dress on there and was communicating with a rep for a while. They were great! The only kicker with ordering a dress online besides making sure you have accurate measurements is that if you opt for the customization it will not be returnable. Read the fine print as much as possible.

You can do it!!! Check out David's Bridal sales, ModCloth, BHLDN, and department stores online--I keep finding beautiful simple dresses for $150-$500 when I browse! Also, don't be afraid of bridal consignment shops!

Check out Azazie online - they have tons of bridesmaids dresses that come in white, as well as a bridal collection. You can order at-home try on samples for $10/$25. The wedding dresses are in the $300-400 range. They also do custom sizing, so you wouldn’t need alterations. I tried a couple on at home and the quality is excellent.

In addition to all the advice from pp's about how to find a less expensive dress, there are lots of things that will influence the cost of your alternations (besides where you're located and who you choose). First will be how close you are to the ordered dress size/measurements. If you have a pretty "standard" body shape/size/height, obviously it will be easier to find a great dress that fits you. The better it fits initially, the less work you'll need to have done in alterations. (Also, beware that sample dresses in bridal stores are going to be very stretched out -- so just because the sample fits perfectly, the same size of a new dress might fit very differently. Daughter tried on an 8 sample, and it seemed huge on her -- they literally clipped about 4" at the waist. When they measured her, she was a perfect size 8 on the designer's size chart. That's what we ordered and it fits perfectly!) Second, different styles of dresses and different design elements are going to influence the cost of alternations. A closely fitted mermaid gown that needs alterations in the bust, waist and hips to fit right is likely to cost more to alter than an A-line or ball gown. A corset back will also give you more flexibility on fit, if you like that style. Also, if you're going to need to have the dress shortened, the more layers and design elements, like lace edging at the hem and appliques, the more work & cost in the alternations. Choose your style and fit wisely, and you'll likely be better able to control your alternations budget. Finally, things like an illusion back are going to influence the type of undergarments you might need -- those can be really pricey! If you choose a dress that will allow you to wear less-expensive undergarments (that you might already own), you'll also reduce your total costs. Good luck! I do think it's very possible for a bride who does her research and then sticks to her budget & plan. Smiley heart

Echoing others! I got my dress for 450, marked down from like 1150 during the big David's Bridal sale. I expect alterations to be 350-400 so that would be right around your budget!

I found my $3500 dress on tradesy for $150. It had been a sample gown that had been on a mannequin for a while and needed the zipper replaced but my alterations are only around $450 so its doable! I had a $7000 budget for my gown but decided I wanted to spend it elsewhere and I'm so glad I did.
