Unusual Ceremony Seating

Emma, on August 17, 2022 at 3:43 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 18
So, I’m unhappy with my ceremony venues chairs. We’re getting married at our church, which uses neither chairs, nor pews, but old, ugly school desks. We cannot remove all the chairs, and we will only have a few hours to decorate prior to the wedding. I need advice on how to subtly decorate and improve the looks of these desks. They’re these but no legs in front and dark brown wood and chair. The most important thing is the marriage, but I’d like to do something to spruce these up. Approximately 120 chairs fit in the ceremony space. Thanks for your help!

Wow, that's a new one. Usually when people complain about venue chairs here, they are maybe just outdated or an unattractive color. But I would not be happy with those chairs, either. The unpleasant associations with school, alone, would have me changing venues! Not to mention how uncomfortable those would be for dressed up guests.

Ahem, sorry, didn't mean to make you feel worse! So, honestly, I don't think there's anything you can do to make these look nicer that won't just accentuate how inappropriate they are for a wedding venue. Anything you try to add to decorate or cover them will just make them stand out more, I fear. I think you should just try really hard to focus on other things. What decor are you planning for the room in general? Make sure that's eye catching and pretty and the chairs will just...be chairs.

Did they explain why you can’t have those removed for your ceremony?

I’m wondering this also. Why can’t you remove these desks and bring in rented chairs that are appropriate for a wedding?

Oh nah…..!!!!! I just want to know how are adults supposed to sit at desks like children?!?! There aren’t tables either I’m assuming? This is very strange… definitely something I would have discussed before booking because it’s a no for me!

Only thing I could think of is maybe putting like a little arrangement on the desk? But that’s a lot for each desk and then when they need to eat they’ll probably have to remove any table decor. Idk sis… these desks don’t seem wedding appropriate to me. Maybe also reach out to people who have had weddings there in the past to see what they did?

So it’s not that they can’t be moved, it’s that it’s a smaller wedding in our church where we use desks (fairly comfortable) and the reception is in another location. It’s a very simple wedding but I’m just trying to find some simple ideas to make them look a little better but I’m not about to ask our church if mainly older people to move over 100 desks and then replace them with chairs after service the day of my wedding. I just wanna make em look a little prettier

Unusual Ceremony Seating 2I have no clue. I'm guessing flowers under the desk where the bar is at. Maybe some type of fabric to cover chair. ( Tulle ) then add some nice name tags kinds like they have assigned seats in school. Maybe some green and more flowers in the basket. Good luck.

I actually really like these chairs-what potential! If you are doing simple decor, will there be aisle(s) between the seating sides? You could place small floral or lighting arrangements down the aisles next to chairs. You didnt mention colors, but i think placing those vintage recrangle paper doilies on each table, along with a program or some other greeting in the center of doilie, in your color theme would be pretty. Best wishes on your wedding!

Table clothes that go all the way to the floor and maybe some sort of small center piece. This is my best advice… other than renting chairs and having the rental company flip the space.

Hey thank you for the advice! They really aren’t j guess as ugly as I played up just very plain. But the whole church has a 80’s wood panel vibe. So they don’t like not match the room but we will def look into doilies and programs!

Hmm you could have the first row decorated with either flowers or bows in the front of each dest or have pretty bows on the back of every chair. Good luck!

There is no way I would want to use those chairs because no matter how you decorate them they still look like chairs for children.

I'm not sure what advice you want because you can't really get seat covers for them and I don't really see a way to decorate them. So the only options I see are to just deal with them or rent other chairs. I would lean towards renting other chairs because there is no way these will be comfortable for full grown adults.

As a full grown adult, we sit in the adult size version of these three days a week every week it’s not comfort I’m worried about they’re all padded and comfortable, and the reception has actual chairs, but since we are doing the decorating and planning ourselves on a small budget I cannot rent and I refuse to ask my (majorly) elderly church members to move ocre 100 desks the day of my wedding. I just wanna know if anyone has some good ideas on how to decorate to make them just a bit more classy. A few people have made help few suggestions like lining them with bows or flowers, which have been very helpful, so we’re watching videos on how to do that now.

I would add a photo of the actual chairs- a lot of people seem to think the chair in the picture is the chairs you have, but from your post it seems that your chairs are all wood and a bit different?

This. Padded, wooden, and no legs in front is way different than what's pictured. I'm not sure how to give any advice when I don't even know what it actually looks like

Do they have the baskets on the bottom? If so, I suggest chair covers. I've torn plenty of clothes on those baskets in school and would be very upset if I tore a formal dress. Since you said the chairs don't look out of place, I don't think any will notice or care as long as they're comfortable. I do like the idea of doilies, or maybe even tatting, on the desks.
