Up lighting... the do's & don'ts

Andrea, on May 26, 2017 at 12:09 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 17

My reception space doesn't allow any type of decor to be hung from the ceiling for insurance and safety purposes. No ladders are to be used to hang up any decor.

I originally wanted to hang string lights and lanterns from the ceiling, but since that's no longer an option, I thought of uplighting the venue!

Have you/are you planning on doing that for your reception?

Anyone familiar with rentmywedding.com?

Same with my venue! I'm not familiar with that site but will be using uplights from my dad (he's a dj). They really dress up the place!

It comes with my venue! We're just having the plain white lights, no color. It looks very pretty and sets a "mood" lol

We are having 20 uplights set to a champagne color. It is calm enough to set the mood without being "in your face". I love how they look in photos.

We are doing uplights as well. The package comes with 20 of them and doing the golden champagne color to set the mood.

I am renting uplights (for my outdoor tented wedding in 3 weeks) from rentmywedding. They have been great to deal with so far! We rented several of the wireless uplights that have multiple color options, along with one of their patterned lights for above the dance floor. The pictures look great- I'll let you know how it goes when they get here!

Our venue has a very inexpensive uplighting package that we're including. Sometimes it just makes the space, sometimes it has little effect. See if you can find photos from your venue with and without the lighting and see how you feel about it. Many DJs offer it with their package or at a small additional cost, see what you can afford and weigh out all your options, if it works and replaces the cost of your string lights and what not, then why not. Or you could see if you can possibly get uplighting that resembles twinkling stars and find the happy medium.

Thought about it because the dj offered a package. but we didn't think we'd get enough effect with an outdoor wedding. (No tents, our indoor rain option is the aquarium, which already has awesome lighting.)

Our dj has uplighting but I'm not sure if I want to use it. I've seen it look amazing at places but we are getting married in a 1920s theater so I think it would clash with how ornate the place already is. I'm usually pro uplighting though.

The venue our reception has backlighting and it is handled strictly by one of the inhouse DJ's or by the venue staff if you opt for a band.

My venue does not have a light dimming option, so the overhead lighting is either on or off. i went to a wedding that did not turn the lights off while people were dancing and it really was hard to get into it. I rented lights from rentmywedding for my october wedding so that i can turn off the lights but still provide enough for people to get around safely. It was cheaper than what my DJ offered, i am just using his standard light package.

Make sure you get enough for the space. I didn't know this beforehand, but for some parts of my wedding, the uplighting didn't light up the whole space (it was a large room), so it was mixed with some of the ceiling lights. Eventually, my DJ brought out more and it really did transform the room.
