Up Lighting Yes? No?

melanie, on May 5, 2016 at 1:29 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 38

We are in the middle of picking our DJ and figuring out what we want to do about décor too. They offer Up Lighting but I'm wondering if it's worth the extra expense? I was quoted around $900 for 12 lights seems extreme especially since we are on a budget, but I was wondering what everyone's opinion was? are you using Up Lighting?

Wow that seems like a lot! Ours was included in our quote....we aren't even paying $900 for our DJ but maybe it's a location kind of thing. I think it comes down to your personal preference but I don't think anyone walks away from a venue and says...wow that uplighting was great! Here are photos of my venue with and without. I think it looks good either way! I've opted to go without even though it was included.

$900 seems reallyyyyy high. Our DJ gave us a package deal so I can't be sure what the individual costs are (we are doing DJ, photobooth, uplighting through him) but it can't be even close to that. I would try getting a couple other quotes.

I do think up lighting revs up how great a room looks. Mine "made" my setup, taking it from beautiful to stunning. But it honestly is one of the first things to go if your budget is stretched

We paid our venue $1100, for amber uplighting, around the whole ballroom (large - so a lot more than yours) and pin-spots, on the 26 guest tables, sweetheart table, and cake table. Your quote sounds too high. We were in an east coast city, a few years ago.

Ours was included with our DJ, and we're paying less for the DJ and the uplighting than what you were quoted just for the lights. I'd pass.

Wow..$900 is a lot. My DJ is doing our uplighting for roughly $300 more.

I think this depends on COL. Our quote probably would have been around $1k for a wedding of your size, but we are in allegedly the second most expensive wedding market in the country. Have you gotten multiple quotes? That might help you figure out what the standard is in your region.

Dreamer, not to be a total creep but I saw from your profile you used BVTLive. So are we! What band did you use?

I think we had 8 lights for $250, which was definitely worth it. I'd see if you can get another quote, maybe you don't need to go through your DJ.

That's way too much. You can rent uplighting from a variety of online sites for about $17-$19 per light (I think the highest I saw was $24 for wireless). So, yeah, for *just* uplighting, $900 is a scam.

Just for uplighting?! I think that seems extreme. We are paying the same amount for uplighting, 4 floor to ceiling string column lights, monogrammed lighting on one wall, and a few pieces for ceremony decor. I guess it also might depend on where you are located...but I would look around some more if I were you.

I wish you hadn't made this thread. I checked local prices just to find out, found diy uplighting for $17 a light, and booked them. Damn it lol. I had just assumed it was too expensive and never looked.

I think rentmywedding.com has up lighting. Not sure of price, but it ships to you for free and return is free as well.

My venue includes up lighting but my dj offers it at 300 too, which I didn't take cause free is better. But I think I could do better things with 1k

That's one of the questions I asked when I visited each venue because some of them said it was extra. It's such bullshit. Flick a switch on the wall and gimme my lights! The venue we chose came with it - all we have to do it tell him what color. They dance too!

I love uplighting, but it's only 100% necessary if you have a reception in a room made of all glass. The photography flash needs something to bounce off of, since, obviously, there's no real walls, only glass. This is the reason I had it in my venue, my venue was a glass conservatory.

$900 for 12 lights is absurd. you can rent your own wireless uplights from rentmywedding.com for $24 each. they're pretty foolproof to set up. We were going to go this route, but the florist/event company doing our flowers and ceiling drapery added the uplights for a little bit of nothing.
