Up Lighting Yes? No?

We are in the middle of picking our DJ and figuring out what we want to do about décor too. They offer Up Lighting but I'm wondering if it's worth the extra expense? I was quoted around $900 for 12 lights seems extreme especially since we are on a budget, but I was wondering what everyone's opinion...

I'm totally using them, but lucky me, the venue has some I can use for free! Love up lighting. Of course, I wouldn't pay an extra $900 just to have them.

@twostep127 - Jellyroll and our guests are still talking about it. Only wished we had invited a table or two less of guests, because the dance floor was packaged all night, including me on it, and we could have used more room. So many people said that they never saw a bride have so much fun, at their wedding.

One of the great things about them was that the first thing my Mom said, when she called the bandleader, is that she can't stand loud noises, and could they please keep it at half the normal volume. I don't know if they did exactly 50%, but it was so much more pleasant, than some weddings we've been to, where the band is many times louder than you need it to be.

I love up lighting. I but that quote seems way too high. I found a company online you can rent them from and it would be about $200. Not sure if I'm going to use them yet, but at least I have a good starting point to negotiate with a dj.

I don't think uplighting is worth it. If it's somehow included in a package then great, go for it. But I wouldn't pay extra to get it.

That's a lot. I wouldn't pay that. Mine are 250 for 10 through my DJ

i love uplighting, but it's only 100% necessary if you have a reception in a room made of all glass. The photography flash needs something to bounce off of, since, obviously, there's no real walls, only glass. This is the reason I had it in my venue, my venue was a glass conservatory.

I'll bounce flash in a pinch, but I prefer direct, off axis lighting triggered by my radio transmitter. If I were getting some interference and couldn't transmit I'll bounce a flash off a white wall only. All kinds of weird stuff happens trying to bounce off of colored wood or glass.

That is WAY too expensive. Our uplighting was $25/each. You can definitely find it for much cheaper! That being said, I think uplighting is really nice to set a mood so you should call around for a better deal.

I know you just said you're not going with them but that is crazy expensive. To rent 12 lights for one evening. Think of what that money could add to your alcohol/food/gifts! Heck, depending on your area, you could maybe hire a performer to sing/play during your recessional for that amount!

900 seems steep. I've seen quotes of 300-500 for 12 uplights

That's alot and if it isn't done right it will make all of your pictures have a colored tinge to them.

FH'S cousin only has reception pics that look purple because of the up lighting

We're renting from our venue for $200, that seems incredibly high. I don't think it is really necessary. We just happened to get a $500 dollar decor credit from the venue when we booked so we are using it.

They are pretty simple to set up, and you can rent them at https://www.diyuplighting.com/ for $17 for each.

    Another tip-

Because you can get wireless uplighting for $24 each at rentmywedding, why not ask if he'll do it for $30 per light?

FYI- I have an 18-light package that is an add-on for $400. (that's $432 if you DIY with rentmywedding). So, yeah.

$900 for 12 uplights is actually cheap. I charge $1000 for 6. Just as a point of reference.

    Edit for clarification.

I'm assuming the $900 isn't JUST for the lights. Sure you could rent from rent my wedding, just do you really want to set them up, tear them down and program them yourself? Also if you have a room with huge glass windows do NOT get uplighting. The sun sets at 8ish so for most of the day you will not get a quality look because the room is going to be so bright. I've used uplighting all the time and photographers have no problem with getting great pictures, not sure where that idea came from but I hear it fairly often. Lastly, I'm not really keen of haggling with your DJ on lighting. Sure you could DYI uplighting for $24 a light so less than $288 for 12. But with DYI they literally send them to you and that's it. With your DJ youre paying for time. The time it takes to set them up, program them, tear them down yadda yadda. Anyway $900 for DJ service plus uplighting is a deal.

$900 does seem a little steep. We got ours through our dj and we had 10 for $250. It transformed our plain white tented pavilion into a blue lit winter wonderland. I am a fan of uplights but not a fan of that price.
