Update on Bridesmaid Situation/Sewn in Cups?

Erin, on January 25, 2017 at 5:27 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 19

Hello all! I don't know if anyone remembers, but a little over a week ago, I started a thread about my FSIL and how the other bridesmaids had picked a dress that was impossible for me to wear. It was $20 from China on Amazon and see through and way too low cut. Anyway, fast forward a week and she has changed her mind! We are now picking our own dresses, in a new color (Petal Pink) and she did not care if it is short or long. However, I am still in a bind because the wedding is literally 2 months from today. I went into David's today and this was one of 2 dresses in my size in the right color. They did not suggest ordering something in for me as it could take 6 weeks and leave no time for alterations. I chose this dress as I really don't need it altered anywhere except for adding cups ($20) vs. a ton of alterations that they estimated to be at least $80 on another dress at the same price. I'm a little worried about getting the cups sewn in. What has been your experience with cups at DB?

No experience, but that is a great dress and it looks really good on you!

Pretty dress! I'm glad to hear that you got to pick a different dress too!

I had cups sewn into my wedding dress (although not from DB) and they did a really good job of securing the girls (I'm 34DD).

Cups in that dress are NOT going to support you.

Go on David's Bridal's website and see if the dresses come in that color in quick ship. Then order accordingly.

Cups are fine for anyone with a C cup or smaller, but unless there's a lot of structural support in the dress (there's not in that one), cups will be worse than useless to you.

@MNA That's what I was thinking also. I have an appointment with them tomorrow to see what they can do. What do you think about FH's grandma sewing just a lining into the back so I can at least wear a strapless bra? (I will get a new one, the one I'm wearing in the photo is old and too small). She is a retired seamstress so I totally trust her

Pretty dress, but I agree with MNA - cups won't work for you in that dress.

If you already purchased and can't return it so you can purchase a different dress with the online quick ship option as MNA suggested, I would ask about them lining the back so you can wear a bra with it.

    I agree with MNA.

If FH's grandma is handy, have her sew a skin toned lining in and then see about getting a bustier. If you get the right one, it will be way more supportive than a strapless bra and, at least in my opinion, much more comfortable.

I understand your in a time crunch but how is that dress any better than the last one? Its literally sheet down to the waste in the back. I would be looking online, at other stores or even resale sites and stores. Petal is an extremely popular color, you have to be able to find something better.

@Sarah I checked this morning before I went and there was a select few that were available with quick ship, but after quick ship, it was way more than I am willing to spend right now.

@MN it's better because It doesn't go all the way down to the middle of my back and would look okay with a sewn in liner in the back. It also is not see through and $20 from China

Hmm, a skin tone lining might let you get away with it, I'd show her pics and ask first though. You'll also need a nude colored bra, keep that in mind!

@MNA I am on it! I'm actually seeing her tonight so I plan on asking her then! And good point! I'm waiting for my next coupon to Kohl's or Soma to get my new strapless bra

Are we all going to pretend that this dress doesn't have one of the same issues you previously were worried about (see-through back, can't wear a bra)? Ok then...

To answer your question, from the photo, I do not think cups would be able to fully support your breasts. If I were you, I'd find another dress or do a back panel. A pink back panel that matched would be cute. Ivory or nude could also work.

My FH's grandma is going to bring a liner tonight for me to see and she will be able to sew it in if that's what we decide to do.. and yes @island I realize it is very similar, but as I mentioned already, it's not see through. It's not from China for $20. And it would be much much easier to sew a lining into the back. The back of the other dress went damn near my crack.

I'm also kind of confused. Even if it's better than the bride's first choice, this dress is still going to take a bunch of extra effort to work with your body type. I just looked on the David's Bridal website and there are tons of options in the Petal color that are in stock, so even without spending extra for expedited shipping the dress would arrive at your house in 6-8 business days giving you plenty of time for alterations. Idk it just seems like that would be easier than the hassle of trying to make this dress work.

Don't have DB do the alterations! Any local tailor shop can sew cups into a dress for like $10.

Another thought- instead of sewn-in cups since you need so much support, what about nude mesh sewn in to cover the open part of the dress? Again, take it a tailor, not DB!

I vote getting a different dress (return this one) from their website. I have ordered a bridesmaid dress from them before and it arrived quickly. Cups will do nothing for you in this dress. I agree with MNA. The lining may help, but what if it doesn't???
