Uplighting and wall-to-wall windows

Kathleen , on August 27, 2016 at 9:36 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 13

I know there have been many "to uplight or not to uplight" posts, but I need advice on my specific venue please! One of the major reasons I chose my venue is the floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall windows on three of the four walls of the ballroom that display fantastic views of the city of Boston. I really love the look of uplighting, but I'm worried it may take away from the view due to reflections off the windows. So I'm thinking of using lights on the 6 columns on just one wall - the one in the middle, behind the sweetheart table. Our colors are purple and silver, and the lights will be purple. I also will have about 10 small candles per table so there will be plenty of light from that as well. I've attached some pics of the venue with lighting. It's hard to tell in photos but would the lighting distract from the amazing views, or enhance it? How would it look to only have the one wall lighted? Please help!

You are correct. You don't want the up lighting directly on the Windows. We had up lighting on the solid walls but had strip lighting along the base of our floor to ceiling Windows. See the pink strip along the base of the window?

Your venue looks amazing!!! From the first photo, it looks like up lighting would work fine, as long as your vendor knows what they're doing. Maybe try to find someone who has worked at your venue before, so they know the ins and outs already?

I would ask your vendor what they recommend, they know best. I think the uplighting is soft and pretty and won't take away from the views.

Uplight the pillars between the windows. Tell them you need a narrow spread par light. If you uplight the windows you'll either get very little affect, get a reflection/glare which will kill the look, or you'll get just a ceiling hit. If you get a narrow spread on your uplight though the beam will have color and a little spill onto those curtains but the view will still look great outside. Also don't worry about having only the solid wall be uplight, it doesn't have the view of the windows.

You may also ask your photographer and/or videographer their input about how the lighting might effect pics. I was told that sometimes lighting can give your guests an unflattering glow in pics depending on light reflections. Beautiful venue!

I like it with the uplighting . I don't think it would take away from the view.

Wow! It looks really awesome, despite I'm a professional in this field, I didn't face something like that on these photos above. Anyway, the service of wood window restoration which you can read here is the nice addition. I can provide even more interesting ideas.
