You may be able to rent the fixtures and set them up yourself. You'll also need cable. And if you get LED lights, consider a second cable (like mic cable, but called dmx) to control them and a controller. And tape to cover any doorways ($20 a roll). Any high quality production house will be able to advise you on what you need. You may be required to buy a liability policy to protect the rental house from harm. That alone will run you about $200. 20 fixtures will rent for about $200 or more. Cable is another $100. Plus, someone has to go get them, set them up (about 2 - 3 hours), and then take them down and return them on Monday (another hour or two). If you get traditional par cans (i.e., incandescent) there might not be enough electricity available. And you'll have to buy a gel sheet for every light, which is another $75 at retail. No one I know of rents gel.

You could buy them yourself, but what do you do with all those lights afterward? Sell them? Maybe. And cable?

Leah, our caterer took care of the uplighting for $75 - the price was right and it meant we didn't have to worry about setting them up or taking them down!

I haven't found any place where I can rent them for a decent price. Another bride had posted a link on here to some that she found. I think I am going to get them from here: http://www.cheaplights.com/cart/page13.html. I'm looking at the 2nd set. The one with 8 lights. And yes, LenW, I'll be trying to sell them after. There are tons of brides on Weddingbee always asking about them. If you go with these lights instead of LEDs they can get hot, though. So just make sure that they aren't anywhere that kids can get curious and start playing with them.

Sometimes doing it cheap means it also looks cheap. Here are some limitations you will find. Some LED lights cannot give you the right shades of pinks and amber (or white). This is an on-going concern for lighting techs. The new fixtures include amber and/or white bulbs, but those fixtures are more expensive.

If you're going to rent, rent LED's so you can have a safer setup. But you'll have to learn how to program them in binary code so they all match colors. Not hard, but time consuming, and you will have a limited color palette.

Typical rental fixtures (PAR cans) draw lots of power and they run very hot. There's a fire danger if they are placed close to cloth/curtains/drapes. You could be blowing circuits because they draw so much amperage. And last, but not least, you have to cut the film to size and remember that, the darker the color, the brighter the fixture you need.

    Good luck!

Talk to your DJ. Ours gave us a pretty good deal on uplights because we asked specifically about it. If you are already using them, they may be able to cut you a deal. We are getting 12 for $300.

Renting uplights can be cheaper than getting them through the venue or having someone else do them for you. The biggest problem is dealing with all the cables and power at venues. Anyone can plug a light in...when there is an electrical outlet nearbySmiley smile 9 times out of 10 it's never where you want the outlet to be. Especially if you have columns in a room to light, you'd have black tape running all over the room and spend an hour getting it all to look right. We rent out wireless lights which are SOO easy to setup. http://rentuplights.com $29 each shipped if you mention you found us on weddingwire. No wires, literally 3 minutes to set everything up. Save money and save time.
