Uplighting: Yay or Nay

SamtasticLou, on October 26, 2015 at 10:24 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 49

How does everyone feel about uplighting? Worth the cost or not really? Our DJ offers uplighting for $250, but I'm unsure if it really adds to the atmosphere or is just a waste of money. My colors are navy, coral and gold, so I'm guessing I would have to go with coral for the lighting. Do you think it's worth the money?

I have no idea. Before spending $250 I would ask the DJ for pictures of examples.

It depends on your venue, time of day of the wedding, etc. It added a LOT to my venue and I thought it was completely worth it.

If its in your budget, definitely Yay! Makes the room so pretty and the pictures look amazing too. Def not a necessity though...

Ask your photographer - ours was able to make the case for why it is a good choice.

ETA: we are going with an amber color to highlight the decor of our venue, you don't necessarily need to go with one of your wedding colors.

We got them. For me, it adds more of a party atmosphere to the space. But it's your personal preference! Maybe see if you can find some pictures of your venue with and some without and compare?

Uplighting was included in our DJ/Photobooth package. I probably wouldn't pay extra for it, I honestly didn't even notice it until my DJ asked me how I liked it. Oops!

I'm in the same boat - our DJ offers it for $150 extra. Our photographer said it makes a BIG difference in the pictures inside and recommended we get it. So, I think we'll end up choosing it. Our colors are turquoise/tiffany blue and coral so I think we'll probably choose the turquoise color since we're having a beach-themed wedding.

Actually, I can show you the difference. One picture is taken from the side facing away from the uplighting (first one), second picture is taken from the side facing toward the uplighting.

We are doing uplighting. We contracted with a lighting company that has lights that can be changed based on the music. Should make for a fun atmosphere :-)

I think uplighting can completely transform a space. Our venue includes it, but if they hadn't I would likely pay for it.

We did it through the room. My cousin did it just at the head table. I am glad we did it.

It can transform a spacer, but seriously, people have been getting married for years without it. It's another example of 'stuff we have to have' that pushes that budget right off the cliff.

Thanks ladies, I emailed my photographer as suggested too. For reference, this is my venue without uplighting other than where the band is.

My venue was made completely of glass windows and every photographer said to get up lighting. so, i did. you wouldn't need coral, you could use the amber, which is what i did, my colors were plum and gold. $250 is a steal, mine was $600 which was discounted 50% from 1200.

If the DJ is worth anything he should be able to match any color. If you have it I say its worth it. I tell all my couples if you dont get it you wont miss it, but if you get it you'll be glad you did. If really sets that wow factor when done right

Our colors are aqua and red and our dj is providing uplights for our entire tented pavillion and I absolutely love the idea of aqua uplighting with candle light everywhere. Im a fan of uplights. Our was around $275

If you have the budget for it and the space can use it, I say it's worth it. It can make a great first impression to guests and enhance the pictures.

It's one of these strange things that's come into fashion and now is a 'must have' but personally I don't get it. My cousin had it at his wedding and I saw the pictures and really wondered why he bothered. The venue was so stunning (old English Country house) that it just didn't need it - and it actually took away from the gorgeousness of the old house. It just made the space look generic rather than the unique place it was.

That said, I think in some venues it can be worth it. If the venue is darker, or more bland and it needs the lighting to lift it.

But only if it's in your budget. If it's not in your budget then it's not worth it. It won't make or break the wedding - if you have the money and you have a venue that would benefit then go for it.

If you can fit it in your budget and think it will go with your theme then I say to get it. I have been to wedding's with uplighting and it really changed the atmosphere. (good and bad) I wanted uplighting but couldn't justify spending $650 on it. I had a Sunday afternoon wedding and after seeing my venue and what my pictures looked like, I'm glad I chose not to have it. I don't think it would have looked good with everything.
