I just wanted to share with everyone a very cheap way to do uplighting in your reception area. I am taking typical clip on desk lamps and using pink light bulbs. I just wanted to share with everyone a very cheap way to do uplighting in your reception area. I am taking typical clip on desk lamps and using pink light bulbs. I have practiced at home to see the look and will be uploading a pic asap. It works great. I was a little worried about some of the DIY lighting ideas some people had when I looked online. My brother is a certified electrician so I gave him a call and told him what I wanted. He came up with the idea. I tried it out and WOW! You can also use the standing ones. I choose to use the clip on type because it was better for me. They both work fine. The cost is about $12 for each light. You cant beat that price!

If you are testing your set-up in a dark room, in addition to the issue of the height of the room, you also have the issue of the fact that your venue likely will not be completely dark. Notice in Wendy C.'s example, there are yellow wall sconces in addition to the uplighting. And in any room, you need some light in addition to the uplighting, or people will not be able to find their food. The uplighting has to be strong enough so that it can be seen even with ambient lighting.

Obviously, I have no financial stake in whether people DIY their uplighting. However, as one who has done it, I would agree with Wendy that you cannot just assume that normal lamps will give you the dramatic effect you are looking for.

I just say try the different DIY ideas and see what works for you. That's my advice to all the DIY brides. Do what works for you and your budget. There is a lot of pressure out there to do more than what you really can afford to do. My lights will be placed in areas not available for children to get access to.

So glad I stumbled into this discussion...Lol! I plan on having a romantic, candlelight reception, however I would like to uplight certain areas for better photo opportunities.
