Using a charger plate for food?

Monique, on December 13, 2019 at 6:37 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8
I am having an outside wedding/ backyard tent wedding and I don’t want to rent glassware and I want to do something slightly more fancy than paper plates. Anyone ever use charger plates for actual food? They are cheap and sturdy and look nice. They are big! But who cares. More food for the guests.

Chargers are toxic and not food safe. The paint chips off extremely easily.

It's definitely true that many chargers are not made out of food safe material. But also, do you mean you would buy chargers and basically use them as disposable plates? That seems more costly than it's worth and wasteful to boot. And as for the size, if you are having a buffet, you run the risk of encouraging guests to take too much food (to fill the giant "plate") and running out.

Have you looked into the cost of renting china? It can be very inexpensive per plate and you don't have to wash them. Otherwise, I would use good quality, sturdy paper plates.

What do you think about using the nicer plastic disposable plates, like these at Sam’s Club?

I don’t think they’re safe for eating off of. I’ve seen some with coatings that might ship off with a fork scraping it.

Agreed with previous posters. It is not safe to eat off chargers.
Is your wedding being catered? I’d talk to them about adding plates, silverware and glasses. It’s usually not that expensive to rent, especially if you are already using the company and it will make a big different in the formality and overall look of your wedding then having paper plates and plastic utensils that will easily break and not be able to hold up more than a salad

Chargers are not food safe, I'd just use nice plastic plates.

    Hi,

Most charger plates come with a warning to not use for food. Research shows that those warnings are important since toxins can leak into foods especially hot foods. Try poshpartysupplies.com or tableclothsfactory for good prices and nice looking plates.
