Vegetarian (not Vegan) Guests

Jenhandlady, on May 31, 2023 at 10:56 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 9

We were planning to do BBQ for our Reception. But I didn't think my 2 friend who are vegetarian would come from out of state...and they are kind of "foodies", she definitely is. I do not want to serve them just a cheese sandwich. I'd prefer something that kind of goes along with our menu - BBQ Beef & Chicken, potato salad, chips, punch, tea, water, marble cake with buttercream frosting & assorted nuts. Vegetarianism isn't completely new to me as I was about 99% vegetarian in college.

Thoughts on the following ideas in particular, would be appreciated.

-cabbage steaks (sounds like a cop-out to me)

-vegetable ravioli, lasagna or gnocchi (not sure we'd do anything other than heated up frozen stuff)

-roasted potatoes and vegetables??

-lentil patties (I actually have a recipe from them that was quite good in the past, and maybe goes better with BBQ, but I'm at a loss. I do know she absolutely despises "fake" meat substitutes.)

FYI, our family is doing the cooking/catering so it isn't fancy but the venue does have an oven, stove, fridge, freezer, microwave so we can cook almost anything within reason.

Honestly if I was a vegetarian, I would be worried about cross contamination since the food is not being made my professionals who are required to follow food safety guidelines so I would probably skip eating because I wouldn't want to eat something that I shouldn't be.

Maybe BBQ jackfruit and you can serve it on buns. Its really easy to cook in a skillet.

Hmm how about some veggie kabobs or a black bean burger and whatever sides you are serving you could even do a big pasta salad as a main dish. Best of luck!

I've made vegan chili for friends before at BBQs, obviously you can add cheese and sour cream for garnish since they're vegetarian. It's easy to prep ahead of time and can be tossed in a slow cooker to keep up to temp in it's own vessel so no cross contamination. I made it using pinto, black, and kidney beans along with bell peppers, onion, and random other veg and topped with green onion. I think it would go with the menu theme well, just doesn't plate very pretty is all but most barbecue doesn't

I second this. Chili is a great idea.

I agree with this. There is a reason why some venues require food to be from a licensed kitchen, whether that is a caterer or a restaurant that offers delivery. If the caterer doesn’t provide vegan/vegetarian options, find a restaurant that does and have them deliver. The label everything on the buffet table explicitly for dietary restrictions.

I don't know if you read her full post but she's not using a caterer. I've read some of her other posts and have seen comments she's written on other posts and she's using her friends and family as vendors. I'm hoping she's at least paying them or giving them a nice gift in exchange for them helping for her wedding.

Late to the game on this post, but a Vegetarian Lasagna works. It's easy to do and travels well. Having been in this situation as well, I have found that there are many very easy and appealing recipes with a quick Google search. Many are "fancier" for those "Foodies" too. I have found that vegetarians can and will easily make up their own dishes, with what is provided and offered. Include fresh veggies galore and of course, carb options to go along with it. I have found veggie lasagna is liked by non-vegetarians too. It goes well as a different option for those non vegetarians.

Just a note, make sure the vegetarians actually get the vegetarian food. I've been to BBQ weddings were the vegetarian food was completely gone by the time the actual vegetarians got to eat.
