Veil from Mother's Dress

BB-H, on June 8, 2018 at 12:55 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 15

So, for some backstory, my mother and I wanted me to wear her veil from her wedding in 1988 for my wedding in 2018. It seems though, that the veil had been accidentally thrown away following a flood in the basement that damaged the box that my mother's dress had been stored in. So, she offered her dress for me to make a veil from. After doing over what I'd like to do with it and confirming again and again that it was alright, I started working on it. There was a beautiful layer of organza with appliques and lace on the dress, so I decided to use that. I also separated a section of beading from the neckline and attached it to the section near the comb. I feel like I need to get some of the extra fabric out of the top area near the comb because it feels too fat, but other than that and getting the wrinkles out, I can't think of anything else to do with it and I'm really pleased with how it looks. I know the pictures are not necessarily the best, but if there's anyone who has any suggestions TIA and I appreciate it Smiley smile

That's a beautiful way to incorporate your moms dress! My mom wanted me to wear her veil from my parents wedding in 1990! it looked very.....1990. So instead I'm wearing her garter and also cut some lace from the bottom of her dress to wrap my flowers in, my sister flowers, and my moms nosegay!

Thank you so much for the feedback everyone! It was important to my mother and I to have this connection in my wedding. I'm her only daughter and she was a bit emotional when we couldn't locate her veil. I hope she loves it as much as I do.

As a bonus, here's another picture of my cat that night. He crawled right up and plopped down on top of my work!

I'm in love with your helper! Reminds me of my own when she saw my organza petticoat for the first time.

I think you did an amazing job on the veil considering it was made from a dress. I will agree that there seems to be a lot of bulk on the comb. Is it one layer or two? I can't really tell from the photos. How did you attach the fabric to the comb?

My suggestion would to be to detach it from the comb and run two rows of evenly spaced gathering stitches an inch from the top. Gather the fabric until it's the width of the comb, fold over the edge so that the rows of stitching are on the wrong side of the veil and then whip stitch it to the comb.

If there's still too much bulk with just gathering you can gather the fabric until it's twice the length of the comb then pleat it to fit the comb. Baste the pleats down, fold over the edge like before and whip stitch it to the comb. Remember to remove the basting threads!

It's one layer and it was actually taken from a section that had a seam through it. I pleated the fabric and hand stitched it together, then whip stitched it to the comb. It should be easy to take apart though to make corrections. I hadn't secured anything tightly yet. Thank you for the advice! I'm not a great seamstress and only spent a semester at college working in a costume shop, so I can get by but not much more!

Update! I got some of the bulk out of the area near the comb and I think it looks much better now.
