Veils: Yes or No?

Suzanne, on March 26, 2020 at 1:39 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 9

I'm at the accessorizing stage of my bridal planning and I can't decide if I should get a veil or not. I was indifferent to veils at first, but I said "yes to my dress" when I saw it with a matching veil. For me, it made me feel like a bride in that moment. However, I want the wedding to be fashionable and contemporary, so a veil seems a bit antiquated with our theme. My two sisters-in-law did not wear veils when they got married. But I also have a pixie cut, so there's little else I can do with my hair except put a veil on. Or at the very least, a veil signals "fancy hair" since an updo or curls is impossible.

Here are my questions:

1. What does a veil add to the overall bridal look?

2. Are veils easy to remove from ceremony to reception? Would I have to get my hair redone (and pay a hairstylist more hours) if I wore the veil for the ceremony and ditched it for the reception?

3. Should pictures be with or without the veil, or a mixture of both?

4. I'm having an outdoor ceremony in the summer. Is a veil hot to wear? Does it blow weird in a breeze?

I personally did not do a veil because i tried it on myself and didn't like it. i went with a headband instead.

i think you could even opt for two hair accessories such as a headband or crown or tiara or clips with your veil or after your veil is taken off.

i think a veil does give a more bridal feeling but it really depends. like i said for me, i didn't like it. i even tried a birdcage and didn't enjoy that on me either. you just have to kind of see what you think looks best on you.

"1. What does a veil add to the overall bridal look?"

In my personal opinion, it finishes & adds elegance to the final bridal look. You could wear a white (cream, champagne etc.) dress to prom or other events. You're a bride once that veil is added. Everyone has their personal preference though

"2. Are veils easy to remove from ceremony to reception? Would I have to get my hair redone (and pay a hairstylist more hours) if I wore the veil for the ceremony and ditched it for the reception?"

From my understanding, it's not difficult but your stylist might need to show someone in your wedding party how to undo the pins.

"3. Should pictures be with or without the veil, or a mixture of both?"

I also think this is personal preference. I want to feel & look like a bride in my photos and a veil is what achieves the look. We'll take a few without too but for the most part I'd like to have my veil.

"4. I'm having an outdoor ceremony in the summer. Is a veil hot to wear? Does it blow weird in a breeze?"

Both are inevitable. It's extra fabric on your head, it's going to be hot. But with the right fabric, you could alleviate some of that warmth. The wind is going to blow everything around, maybe consider a short finger tip length veil vs a cathedral or chapel length if you are concerned about it looking weird!

    Best wishes!

I totally get why you think having a veil wouldn’t fit your theme. Since you have a pixie cut, I think a headband would look really nice. A simple headband may fit your contemporary theme better or you could add a bolder headband if you wish. If you decide to wear a veil, I would probably just leave it on for all the pictures unless you take some before the ceremony and then others after where you take the veil off immediately afterwards and can leave it off. I wouldn’t want to take it off more than once.

Rather than a traditional veil, what about a birdcage style one?

I originally didn't plan on wearing a veil, but I ended up coming across one that I think will complement my dress really well and make it feel a little more "bridal" (my dress is not at all a traditional wedding dress).

    1. I felt like a veil just really completed my look and made me feel more bridal. It’s the only time you can ever wear one lol so why not??

    2. My hair stylist put my veil in, and she showed one of my bridesmaids how to pull it out without wrecking the hair style (my bridesmaid even practiced with the hair stylist’s supervision lol ) so she took it out for me before the reception easily.

    3. We did photos after the ceremony with the veil. Then my bridesmaid took it out and we attended the reception. All the photos after that didn’t have the veil. So it ended up being a mix.

    4. I don’t think it would blow “weird.” It may blow, but honestly I think that always looks beautiful when it does! Some of my favorite photos are when my veil is blowing in the wind. Veils: Yes or No? 1

    1. I personally think adding a veil adds more to a bride. I have one that looks really nice with my dress. Super happy with how they look together.

    2. My veil the end of it is a comb. So it’s just a pull off. I want to do my trial with my veil to check to see how easy is it to take off. Depends on the style really.
3 & 4. Maybe both. Wind will definitely give you some nice picture with the veil. Being warm with it on ehhh I don’t remember it being warm with it on. It’s not really that heavy. Can always get a thin one that can’t be very expensive try the dress with it on and without it. When it gets closer then you can decide when you pick your hair. I think you said it’s on the shorter side. So maybe a headband would work better for you.

I’m on the same boat. I’m actually considering a birdcage veil myself . I think they look classic and have a timeless appeal.
I hope you find what you’re looking for to complete your look!

I always vote yes when it comes to a veil!! There is literally no other time you'd wear one like this. It definitely gives a bridal look something extra. and with short hair, I think it'd add a little flair for you. Personally I think veils will always be in style and a tradition worth keeping!!! I wore mine for the ceremony and took it off for the reception with no issues, didn't ruin my hair or anything. I did photos with and without the veil on.
