Vendor Frustration

Alyssa, on November 3, 2020 at 4:10 PM Posted in Planning 0 14

I need to vent. We were originally supposed to get married this weekend, but like many, had to postpone until May 15th next year. Recently we have been getting anxious about that date and wondered how realistic it would be that we would be able to host 130 guests with all the restrictions in Chicago. After talking to our venue, they encouraged us to postpone again because they don't currently have a kitchen staff, and won't be bringing them back to work until the indoor dining restrictions are lifted long term. Since last Thursday, we've been going back and forth with all our vendors, trying to find a common date for end of next year. Yesterday morning, all but one vendor got back to us that November 12th would work. The last vendor confirmed late afternoon they were available as well. While we didn't originally want a Friday wedding, we got excited for this date because it will be our 6 year anniversary, and all other Saturdays didn't work for us or didn't work for at least one vendor. I emailed everyone right away we were good to go with signing updated contracts, and the DJ says "oh sorry, we had another contract come in this afternoon. Can you pick another date?". I get we didn't technically have a signed contract with the new date, but most vendors will put a temporary hold on that day to give us enough time to reach out to everyone. He knew we were confirming with multiple people, and we literally had talked about it that same day when he confirmed he was free that day. Now we either have to pick yet another day, which isn't an option unless we postpone to 2022, or we have to pick another DJ. This just really sucks that they gave away the date without giving us a reasonable amount of time, or even a courtesy call to see which way we were leaning.

I'm so sorry that you have to deal with all this stress. Smiley sad It does seem odd that your DJ didn't hold the date for you. I would just switch DJs. This one clearly isn't the right fit. I actually find it a bit unprofessional. I could see this happen if you were a new bride asking for quotes but, to already have a contract with them and figuring out a new date, you would think they'd be holding the potential date for you.

I agree with this 100%. I find it odd that they knew you were trying to switch to that date, and didn't give you priority over a new contract (or at least confirm with you before accepting a new contract for that date). I would probably find a new DJ if you aren't OK with giving up your new date.

I agree I would move on! Clearly they do not view you as a priority and any current client of theirs should be a priority. They probably got more money out of the new couple unfortunately. I would find someone else who values you business!

That's super frustrating, but I would probably just go with a different DJ. It's pretty lucky you were able to get every other vendor available on the same day (and your anniversary!) and that they were willing to postpone. Our wedding is in March and our venue basically won't let us postpone without losing money because in Florida there are no more restrictions on gatherings.

I agree 100%! If all the other vendors have that date except for the DJ-move on to another DJ!

Yeah I definitely understand it seems like they were being money hungry. Have you asked if he would give a refund? Would it be a big loss if you find another dj?

Wow, I’m really sorry that they won’t work with you. I feel like even if there aren’t state restrictions, they should be somewhat flexible given everything going on this year.

Luckily he is offering a refund, so we can’t be too upset. The part that was frustrating Is we felt we just connected with him when we booked him. He had some upgrades too that we fell in love with. But we are just trying to stay as positive as possible so we can find someone better. Just sucks hearing “we don’t want to lose your business” but it’s so obvious the other contract was for more money.

I agree with all of the previous posters! New DJ. Like others have mentioned, it is odd your original DJ did not hold your new potential date for you (a current client with an already signed initial contract) or at least checked with you first.

I would ditch the vendor and find a replacement. He didn’t have the courtesy to temporarily hold the date, knowing you’d be confirming very shortly thereafter, so that to me speaks volumes about his professionalism (or lack thereof).

Keep your new date and look for a new dj via Thumbtack.com or Yelp.

Definitely find a new DJ especially since you won't be out any money. It seems really inconsiderate of the DJ not to talk to you first or hold your date temporarily.

That wasn't great on the DJ's part for sure, but I doubt there is anything he can do now. I would just find a new DJ and see if the DJ is willing to refund part or all of your deposit
