Venmo bachelorette party, fun idea or tacky?

Sara, on July 22, 2021 at 11:49 AM Posted in Parties and Events 1 36
I keep seeing it pop up where you make a Venmo for your bachelorette party and then put it on your car. I thought it would be dumb but now am thinking ofay e doing it? Is it a good idea? Is it tacky? We are going to the Renaissance faire the drinks are $7-10 a pop so it would be nice having a bit of extra money.

I find this tacky. I’d also assume you’ll get more inappropriate requests than actual money.

I also thought so initially, but then my friend did it this past weekend and got a couple hundred dollars

Just my opinion. Whenever I see a car with that written on it I find it very off putting. If I have a couple dollars to spare, I’m going to give it to a homeless person not someone I don’t know to buy $10 cocktails with. My honest opinion and thoughts as I see this more frequently and it bothers me every time.

Okay, that is exactly my thought on it initially. I thought it came off as rude and very tacky. The only reason I was kind of thinking about it is because my friend did it last weekend and she got almost $300

I think your initial thoughts were spot-on. Good for her and all, but not reason to do it.

I don't think I'd put it on a car, but I've seen people post a photo of their group with the venmo on social media and I don't hate that. I feel like I'd be more likely to give $10 or something to someone I actually know instead of a random car of people... but that also depends on if this bride has anyone who might get offended that they weren't invited on her social media.

I think begging for money from strangers for a party will always be tacky. Someone else's begging success does not negate the tackiness.

I personally have no problem with it. But it may just be my personality and my friend group.

If I saw someone in the bar with a QR code on them like I've seen on social media, I'd say: "Heck yeah!! Congrats, I'll def. send you some $ for a drink or whatever!".

I don't see it as begging, just a fun way to interact with people at a bar lol. It's not like you're actively going up to people and saying: hey scan this and buy be a drink! It's a suggestion and no one's forcing anyone to give you money.

Okay I was also seeing it this way too. I have an issue of just not wanting people to think badly of me and it's something I have to work on so I am just trying to figure out if it's something I want to do or not. So far it seems a lot of people find it tacky/rude

I mean I'm 28, and I've noticed with my age group (at least in my area), it's becoming more common and no one has a problem with it lol. I honestly think it's up to interpretation and how people take it. Some won't care or pay any mind, others might think it tacky/rude like posters above, and others like me will welcome it and join along! You can't interpret what everyone is going to say, so you'll have a mixed bag. Just depends on whether YOU think it's a fun idea or not!

I think it is a near idea, I just hate the idea that people will think badly of me because I have it lol. Just something I have to get over and understand not everyone is going to like you 😅

    I hear ya!!

Also something to keep in mind if you're worried about what people think: What are the chances you'll see the people there ever again? lol very slim....so try not to let what strangers think bother you! Just do what you want and have fun on your trip!

I don't see a problem with it! Seems similar to if you were wearing a "it's my bachelorette" sash to a bar and some stranger buys you a drink for the occasion.

Exactly what I was thinking! I think it's just a new-age way to the sash approach. Plus it's easier for people to just scan the QR code and send you the money rather than wait at the bar with you for someone to wait on you.

Right?! Not to mention safer - IDK if I'd even want to accept a drink from a stranger without eyeing the drink being made/opened the entire time!

Oh wow I didn't even think about the safety aspect of it! Good thinking!

I hate the word tacky because it is so offensive. But this is highly inappropriate. People lost all comprehension of manners with the last few generations but this is asking for trouble. Not to mention unless you know for a fact that everyone you are interacting with is safe, you risk identity theft as well.

    I agree, I don't think it's tacky - & agree with "Marianne" and "SHY"!

You do you girl! Don't worry about what others will think/say - people always have something negative to say - so might as well go for it and do what you want!

I personally find it offensive that you directed your 'lost all comprehension of manners' comment to the last few generations, which includes mine. It's just a different way of thinking, and to each their own, but I really don't appreciate it when generations before me assume mine and newer ones have lost our manners just because new ideas are created that you may not agree with.

As far as safety goes, I like how Marianne put it in her comment. I'd much rather have someone scan a QR code to venmo me $5 for a drink, rather than a stranger buy me one and hand it to me without me knowing what went in it. For identity theft, that is something to consider, but it's still very unlikely to happen.

I would consider it tacky, but I don't really get how Venmo is a "social app" and think its really strange that you can see payments sent between people. Regardless this seems like a "Go Fund Me" for your bachelorette which just doesn't seem appropriate to me. I'm not really interested in buying drinks for someone for an event I didn't get invited to.
