Venting dang alterations

CountryBride, on June 26, 2021 at 7:23 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 17

So I am a planner, and I wanted to get a ball park amount for how much my wedding dress would be to alter here is what needs altered,

My chest needs taken in

my belt needs tacked on

and I was wanting them to extend the train,

I got into my dress and she said without making my train look tacky she cant extend the train I don't have any problem having people tell me no, but it was her tone,

Then she told me that my boobs are sagging and she can't do anything to lift them up I asked her about cups she said no and I can wear a bra up no it would show the back I told her this she said she can't do anything about my boobs,

and then had the odassity to say that my dress doesn't flatter my figure

she doesn't think she can work with me because she doesn't think I can afford her services

I asked her what was the total and she said 200.00 so I got dressed, I walked out to check out, The co worker was a sweetheart, She was asking about the wedding, where the wedding was the witch came up to the counter, and I Said loudly yeah I have to find someone else to alter my dress, Even though I set a grand out of my 30k budget for alterations I guess I can't afford you guys thanks have a great day the lady's jaw dropped, they are loosing buisness. and I wanted to help them but no I now will take my buisness elsewhere it's one thing to tell me no on the train completely different to make comments about my dress and body, side question can my dress train be extended?

That is horrible. I’m so glad you walked away that is never acceptable. I would have requested to speak to a manager or the owner. How disgraceful is that!! That just pissed me off. I am not a seamstress but I’ve heard several times that extending a train can be done but it might look disjointed. It doesn’t hurt to ask a different seamstress. The other one just seemed evil and like she didn’t want to do anything for you. I’m sorry you experienced that.

Wow how awful. I’m sorry that happened to you.
I agree that it would be very difficult to extend the train. You’d have to almost remake the skirt and I don’t know that it would be worth the money for the end result.
Bra wise, how incredibly rude. If you can’t wear a bra (and not seeing the back of the dress it’s hard to say if she’s right) then I’d suggest using sports/paper tape or booby tape to create the shape you want. That’s definitely easily fixable.I think it’s an excellent idea to go somewhere else and use someone who is actually interested in doing the job rather than just insulting you.

There is nothing wrong with your dress and your boobs aren't saggy. She can kick rocks.

Consult with another alterations specialist. My personal opinion would be that the train can't be extended due to the lace embellishment. You could see about a detachable train (basically a skirt that wraps around your waist that you could take off) but I think you would be better served by simply having a long, beautiful veil like in the photo (if that isn't your actual veil) instead.

I am a little confused...your reception dress has a longer train, so why don't you have that as your ceremony dress instead? In that case, the one you have in this current picture would be better for the reception. I'm also not convinced you're happy with this dress since along the way you have questioned whether or not to add sleeves, change the back to corset, and now wanting to make train longer. I think it's lovely as is!

May I ask where you went? I’m assuming David’s bridal and if you did I’m very glad you walked out. When I was buying my dress they fat shamed me so I didn’t buy my dress through them I bought it off of poshmark. I then had trouble with alterations so I did end up going back for those and the last was the sweetest. I would definitely go somewhere else if I were you.

Oh wow that’s ridiculous then!! Maybe you should try David’s? They can be pricy but maybe it’s worth a shot? Thank you I was very upset afterwards and actually the dress size that the lady insisted that I was going to fit in I now do fit perfectly in.

    Wow good morning to you
I am very happy with my dress I wanted to add sleeves because I’m getting married in spring outside where it may be cold, I always envisioned a long train, and I wanted to see if I could do a corset because it would be an easy alteration so I could save money on shareware and make my chest look gorgeous

So sorry you had such a bad experience and that the seamstress made rude comments and assumptions about you.

I don't think it is possible to add fabric onto the train without it being fairly noticeable. If you add fabric there will be a seam, and even if you found the exact same fabric I think it would be pretty noticeable. It is much easier to take fabric away than add. I guess technically the applique could be removed from the tulle, the entire skirt rebuilt, and the applique added back on but even then I think you'd need extra applique to fill in the gaps once the train is lengthened. You could potentially add a gusset in the back but it would be noticeable. Any of these options would noticeably impact the appearance of the dress. While perhaps not impossible, lengthening the train does not seem like a realistic option. You would have been better off buying a different dress if you wanted a longer train, or ordering the dress with a longer train direct from the manufacturer.

Without seeing the back its difficult to know whether or not cups could be added and whether they would provide support. If the dress has a low back and you have larger breasts, cups may not provide enough support for your boobs. However, I think boning could be added to help. And if the dress has a higher back I don't see why cups on their own wouldn't work.

Glad you are taking your business elsewhere!

$1000 should absolutely cover taking in the dress and adding a belt, (and cups and boning) but I'm unsure whether much can be done about the train and I'm pretty sure any alterations to the train would be quite expensive due to the material, applique, and how much structural work would need to be done to make a train extension look good. Were you planning to have a bustle added? I'd factor that in as well, but aside from the train non of the alterations you are requesting are too extensive and should definitely fit within your budget.

Unfortunately she was right about the train, you can't just make it longer. As a seamstress, I understand possibly her frustrations. I worked David's bridal Andi t was exhausting having brides be angry that we can't make miracles.
BUT you should absolutely have cups put it, it will help immensely! Not sure why she said you couldn't have cups put in.

Wow that's so ridiculous that she made comments about your body (p.s. you look great, and that dress DOES flatter you!!!) and assumptions about your finances........just wow........I'm so glad you aren't giving her your business because that was TOTALLY unacceptable, regardless of the discussion about the actual alterations!!! I'm sorry that happened to you!!!!

Usually if it's already made into the dress they can't extend it. What you can do is get a cathedral length veil.
