Venue for Sale

Marie, on June 2, 2021 at 8:29 AM Posted in Planning 0 8
I found out through a friend recently that my Venue is listed for sale. I reached out to the owner and she initially said

“No, you don’t need to look for a new venue. The plan is to sell the business with our contracts being honored!! The couple of people who have expressed an interest want to keep it as it is!! It could actually take years before we are sold.”
This gave me comfort at first. But I then reached out again to ask for a guarantee that we will be able to have our wedding there. Her response was: “ I totally understand!! I hope to learn more from 2 of the interested parties. Both have said they want to keep the business and honor the contracts. I don’t know any more as n that. “
Do I need to be looking for a new venue?!? HELP

It would make me very uncomfortable because you don't know for sure if the new owners with honor the contract or want to make any type of changes. Since you signed the contract with the current owner, a new owner wouldn't be legally bound to the contract. If I were in your shoes, I would start researching new venues.

One thing you could do is start looking for other venues, and ask one of them to put a soft hold on your date until you have more information on whether your contract will be honored with your current venue. That way, if you do end up needing to switch, you'll already have a backup plan in place.

It would be a huge stressed for me. Yes the potential buyer can say that they plan on honoring contracts but unless it's in writing when they buy it, what they say means nothing. I'd be nervous and definitely looking for a new place.

You have plenty of time to find a new venue, which is exactly what I would do! I would never trust a new owner to honor someone else's contracts.

Legally they are supposed to honor contracts but....the resolution for a broken contract takes place after it’s broken, so if you have time for a backup plan, that’s a good idea.
If you can afford to eat any non-refundable fees, you may want to consider backing out.

The fact that the venue didn’t even give you a heads up and is acting so nonchalant when you contacted them is a huge red flag. Find out what can be done legally because they broke their end of the deal and look for a new venue immediately.

Go on eventective.com and see what is available. Blank slate venues and those via the local parks department will likely have the most open slots. They provide tables/chairs/kitchen and you bring everything else which is actually much less expensive than an all inclusive.

So started looking into back up plans. I asked about cancellation since venue is up for sale- she said I would be responsible for the entire amount unless they rebooked it.
So she cannot guarantee my date or that I will 100% be able to have my wedding at that venue, but yet I am responsible for the entire amount...

I’ve cried way to much over this...
