Venue increase if postponed until 2021

Vanessa, on July 8, 2020 at 6:03 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 12
Originally was supposed to get married 08/29/20 so decided back in april to postpone till next year but when we called our venue they said no!!! They said we had to get married this year regardless of the Global pandemic otherwise their fees would increase for us if we wait until 2021. So now our new date is 11/06/20 and that looks like it’s not going to happen either! Anyone else having issues with their venue not understanding??? All other vendors have worked with us. Can’t believe the venue has no sympathy to whats going on.

It's super unfortunate but definitely not uncommon. There are many brides on this platform that have mentioned the same thing. Some are a little more lenient but for the most part there are additional fees to change to a new year.

Sadly this is not uncommon. Rates / taxes change year to year and while we would like venues to be more understanding, they have to meet their guidelines as well. Unless there is something specific in your contract, you’re out of luck.

I’m sorry! But a fall wedding will be gorgeous! Think of the beautiful colors and weather.

I’m assuming since it’s so close to your original date that you paid the majority of your venue cost already? I call bullshit on the venue. If you agreed and signed a contract for a certain rate, they could face a lawsuit if they try to host events during a pandemic and someone were to get sick. It also depends on what the state guidelines are for your venue at the time of your wedding. If you know any lawyers I would maybe have them review your contract.

My FH's cousin had the same thing happen to her. Her venue said they would lose their entire deposit + have to put down a new one if they moved the wedding to 2021. And then they told her they were "doing her a favor" by letting her reschedule at all!

I think that’s unfair, my wedding was supposed to be 22/8/20 and we rescheduled for next April and even though the venues will be increasing on their prices I’m allowed to keep my original pricing because I booked before the pandemic and I along wit others were even given the opportunity of first choice to pick a new date before they took on new bookings. I wish all goes well with your plannings if not I’d say find another venue that will allow you of your new date. Best of luck!

Ummmm I would look at my contract if I were you. What does it say about rescheduling and acts of God or nature (the legal term is force majeure)? I don't understand how they can increase the price if there is a signed contract for the current price already, and the pandemic is clearly out of your and the venue's control. Will they have you sign another contract?

That so ridiculous. Honestly, it would suck, but I’d cut guests or cut back on some venues items (from cocktails to only beer/wine, less expensive food options, etc), to pull money from the venue budget.

Ugh I understand completely. Our venue wanted to do the same thing. Either this year (were in phase 3 in VA) or “cancel” the contract and put down a deposit for next year same date (no other option for date) plus the addition of what the 2021 deposit difference is.. that would’ve been 1k more than the deposit we put down to begin with. Like I get they’re a business too but it’s sucks. So we’re making the best of it. We’re allowed and can safely distance for 100 people including staff and vendors. And no masks required during the ceremony since it’s a “religious ritual” and the reception will follow restaurant guidelines for everything else. FH and I are trying to make the best of it and just say it’s gonna be a good story for the grandkids. It won’t be my ideal day... but it’ll still be our day. Best of luck with whatever you decide!! ❤️

That’s awesome that they are doing that for you I wish it was the same here. We would have to sign a whole new contract and lose our deposit. It’s horrible. But def going to review the contract.

My venue said we would forfeit our entire deposit and the plate price per person would be increased $5! At this point, there is no resume date in NJ about when we can have receptions so I’m stuck in limbo!
