Venue is still closed

Marissa, on May 29, 2020 at 4:30 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 7

Hey all, I'm getting married 10/10/2020 and I'm hoping I can get some advice about my venue.

So my venue is still closed and the only way for me to reach them is by phone call. They don't have an email and they are not active on any social media. I haven't heard from them at all. Every time I call it goes to voicemail saying along the lines of, "We are closed due to the virus and will open back up until the president says it's okay to. If you have an event in the upcoming months, we will honor your deposit for a new date if needed." Of course I leave messages, but no response... The venue is a restaurant and event center, so I was hoping they would reopen the restaurant part, but nope, nothing yet. The venue is in a rural county in CA, about an hour from where I live. I need to ask my venue if my wedding could still be a possibility this year with my 40 guests, or discuss postponement options. I really want to know the logistics and all that. I also really want to take a tour of the place again. So now I'm just worried and hate playing the waiting game!

Should I continue to hope that they open soon, and keep calling each week? Or search for a new venue that is open now that has availability for my date. (Which will be very difficult since the 10/10 date is really popular this year, and we've already put a deposit down on our current venue.) Our plan b is to ultimately get married in my parents backyard if the venue is still not open, but I really don't want that Smiley cry Any other brides with a similar situation?

October is still a few months away, my guess is your venue will definitely be open by then. It is strange they aren't calling back. I'd keep calling them and leaving messages.

Maybe try to contact them through social media?

    Good luck!

Thank you! Yeah I'll keep calling each week and see. I don't think I'll be able to find a new venue in time. I just have to remember I still have about 5 months to go and a lot can happen until then!

It's unfortunate that they don't have email or social media. Do they at least have a website? If so, you should see if they have a "contact us" page. Otherwise, it's likely that since they're closed and no one is physically there to answer the phone, they don't even know that you've been leaving messages. If the restaurant has a separate phone number, you could try calling them, too. The restaurant might reopen before the event space. As far as postponement options, check your contract to see if it says anything about what would happen if they were unable to fulfill their end of the contract. It probably doesn't say anything about postponing, but it might give you an idea of what to expect if they cancel on you. If losing your venue deposit would eat up most of your wedding budget, it probably doesn't make sense to find a new venue, but if you can afford to lose the money, it's a good idea to start calling around. Just because you look at other venues, doesn't mean you have to choose a new one.

I definitely understand it's frustrating, but you also have some time. If they don't have social media, etc., I'm assuming they are a privately owned business. My guess is that all the employees have been temporarily let go and the owner is trying to manage the summer events right now and figuring those out before thinking about October.

I’m also getting married in October at a private family own business in Ca. I have sent two emails about updates and considered postponing since stay at home orders were placed in March. I have received the same message saying that at this moment it’s too early to know and the venue still plans to continue with the wedding. I was told They would know more by July/August. I’m a stuck with do I continue planning or wait to do the rest of my wedding planning in August? It’s frustrating but I’m sure your venue hasn’t considered postponing since it’s far out. CA is currently in Phase 2 so probably by July we will be in phase 3 to have restaurants open

I'm also in CA. My reading of the phases is that weddings are treated the same as in person worship. The current restriction is 25% of venue capacity or 100 people, whichever number is lower. Households should be 6 feet apart.

Of course, all this is moot if your venue doesn't call you back. My venue has been calling couples 3 months ahead of time to move dates. I'd use the backyard as your Plan B because if your venue is still closed, other venues are probably closed also.

Thanks everyone! My venue finally called me back and they said we're good to go in October and to just continue planning as normal! Don't give up hope!

I hope this thread helps other brides in a similar situation!
