Venue Kitchen Restrictions

Morgan, on August 15, 2016 at 5:48 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 14

Hi everyone!

We've just started the long road of wedding planning (eeee!) for a November 2017 wedding. At first, we were going to go with an all-inclusive venue, but have decided that with the length of time we have, a more DIY/cost-saving approach is doable.

However, one of the venues we've looked at (a 1930's-era community center) has only a warming kitchen available. It is otherwise extremely affordable, charming, spacious enough for our anticipated turnout, and located next to a beautiful rose garden (which he also proposed in, so bonus points for the sentimentality factor ?).

Have any of you utilized a venue that had only a warming kitchen (or no kitchen at all)? If so, how did it go, in terms of cost and the quality of the food (still warm and still tasty)?

Edit: We are definitely going with a professional caterer.

I'd ask your caterer if they have experience with this and how it went.

Our venue gave us recommendations for caterers that frequent the venue and are capable of preparing the food properly.

For context: we are getting married on the property of an old historical home with a barn and only have the old Dutch ovens and a refrigerator so all food is either prepared on site or kept hot.

Hire a professional caterer and ask them.

Sometime DIY can be just as expensive as all inclusive FYI Smiley smile research costs first.

I would ask your caterer what they need to prep. Ours just needed a warming kitchen. All food was prepared off site and brought to venue

A caterer should be able to handle this no problem. If you're doing it yourself... I have no idea that would concern me to serve people from that kitchen.

How many people are you inviting? It's super sweet it's right near the rose garden. Also DIY does not mean less money, it can, but it doesn't always.

A lot of DIY type venues only have "prep kitchens" or whatever. The caterer should be use to working with these types of venues. Most of the caterers, especially restaurants who offer catering, prepare the food off site anyway and then transport it and keep it warm.

Your caterer shouldn't have a problem with this.

The company I'm with packs an entire kitchen in their trucks. Grills, fryers, ovens, warmers, tables etc.

More than likely, they will utilize that space for plating (and apps if you're doing them) but not for the cooking itself.

Morgan, you had us all so nervous it would be your mom and bridesmaids scooping out potato salad for guests.

Sooo glad you are having a caterer. Can you ask the venue how caterers deal with a warming kitchen?

My caterer is excited that my venue has a pro kitchen they can use, but has portable equipment as well. If it's a caterer that does lots of off site events they are likely set up for anything. They'll par cook some things, and bring in propane powered grills if they need to. Even if they're a smaller company, they can rent everything they need. You should definitely mention the situation when talking to caterers just in case.

This is pretty standard. A pro caterer will prep in their own kitchen and just warm on the premises.

My venue has zero kitchen space (seriously, not even like an empty room or anything) and the caterer did not blink and eye. It will probably be easier to do something buffet style vs plated though
