Venue only accepting checks as payment????

Dj Tanner, on February 14, 2020 at 3:47 PM Posted in Planning 0 15
Hey All!
So my wedding venue tells me that they only except checks as payment. Is this normal? Keep in mind my venue is one of the more expensive venues in my state. Not to toot my own horn or anything but my FH and I have worked really hard on our credit and im proud to say that we have cards with amazing interest rates. When budgeting we factored in using a large sum on an initial payment mixed between our savings and some on our cards to get most of the cost of the wedding out-of-the-way so that way we can have as little stress as possible about our big day. I find it hard to believe that for such an exclusive and popular venue they only except checks. I know we can figure out a way to make it all work but it just really puts a damper when we had very specific financial budgeting plans and now it just seems like all of that has crumbled. Is this normal and has anyone else experienced this?

I would have loved to make our venue deposit via credit card - for the points I earn as well as the added protection that credit cards provide on purchases. However, they charged a higher rate for credit cards (to cover the transaction fee) and it wasn't worth it to us.

We'll be looking to use the CC in areas where we can, just for cash flow purposes.

Would your CC let you use one of the checks they send - without paying a transaction fee for it. It would be a check for the venue but a charge on your card?

    Good luck!

I would have loved to use cc too. Ours preferred cash and gave us an incentive if we used cash instead. I have heard of some venues not using cc

My venue was the same. They only allowed CC for the deposit to secure the date. I guess with all the scamming and stealing of card information they just decided it wasn’t worth all the hassle. I would suggest to use a CC for your florist, dress, photographer, dj etc.

Our venue actually didn’t even accept personal checks. All payments beyond our initial deposit needed to be made with cashier’s checks- essentially cash. I don’t know if it’s normal or not but this was the case for almost every other vendor we hired as well.

I guess all venues are different because ours allowed credit card for everything. We had the money to pay it all but used a credit card to get the cash back advantage and then just paid the credit card off.

Same here for the deposit, except ours accepted CC with a fee for the remainder. They’re trying not to pay the high CC fees they get charged on such large amounts of money, IMO.

My bridal shop was similar. CC for first 1/2, cash only for remainder.
I believe photographer and DJ will allow payment via card. Definitely for deposit, unsure for remainder.

Thank you for the replies everyone! I’m glad I’m not the only one that understands how convenient it can be to pay with a low interest rate credit card that offers points and cash rewards. Congrats to all of you!

Yeah that’s normal, if you pay with credit card they have to give a certain % to the credit card company. Ours would let us pay with a credit card but then it would be 3% more expensive. No thank you lol. So we paid by check.

My venue and caterer only accept check, and similar to you they are on the higher side for our state. I was super annoyed but let it go, as it actually made it a bit easier to budget (we opened a separate checking account just for the wedding). The most stressful part was mailing the check (our wedding is taking place quite far from where we live, so we couldn’t hand deliver every payment) and the fact that both the caterer and venue took absolutely ages to cash checks. Like 6-8 weeks easily, every time. So it’s not super uncommon, but wanted to give you a heads up if you think this will cause you undue stress.

Glad I wasn’t the only one! I was so shocked when multiple vendors we hired took forever to cash the check. I thought another bride was going to swoop in and take our date

If I wasn't able to put a good chunk of our venue on my credit card, we wouldn't have been able to afford it! No matter how hard we tried to save, we just couldn't meet our budget.

I don't know if this is normal or not I guess it depends on the place. My husband and I paid cash for everything

Our venue preferred cash or check. They are charged a fee if you use a CC. We chose to pay cash in order to save a CC fee that our venue charges. Can you alter your spending in order to make writing the check work for you? Use your cash on the venue and your CC for other expenses you weren’t initially planning on paying cash for?

Update!!!!! So I sent my venue an email and they in fact do accept CC. I was kind of put off slightly as the contract specified says checks only. She then sent me an email telling me oh yes we accept cc and you can even pay online! I kind of wanted to be like this kinda stressed me out a bit but whatever. I’m just glad it’s all working out. Thanks ladies for all your support! I’m so thankful for this app
