Venue postponing advice

AnnL, on March 23, 2021 at 12:20 PM Posted in Planning 0 5
Looking for advice! My wedding was postponed from last year to July 2021. My fiance and I have a lot of family and friends that have to fly internationally to the wedding so we'd like to postpone one more year. But our venue said that they cannot give us any options to postpone or cancel until May 2021 1f629.png (if we postpone/cancel before May then we lose the deposit).
I'm lost and just feel so defeated..does anyone have any advice on what I could do? Should I try negotiate more with the venue? Or should I just ride it out and wait til May?

If you're confident that you want to postpone, I would ride it out until May to avoid losing money, but would try to get the venue to put a soft hold on a new date for you now. Then on May 1, I would reach out to the venue as soon as they open to officially lock in your new date. If you can afford a new deposit and are willing to pay it, you could put a deposit on a new date now so you don't have to wait until May.

Did they elaborate on why you had to wait until May to reschedule? I ask because we had to do the same thing with our original date. And the reasoning behind making us wait was that, if restrictions had lifted enough for them to meet the minimum requirements laid out in our contract, they would have held us to the contract and that date. And if we still desired to postpone at that point (because we also have many guests flying internationally for our wedding), then we would have had to forfeit our deposit and enter a completely new contract, along with another $10,000 deposit, for the new date. If they have not explained the reasoning behind making you wait, I would certainly ask them to elaborate on it. Because if they are not contemplating holding you to your original agreement, it would make sense for them to let you reschedule now and give themselves as much time as possible to have another couple book your current date.

Sorry I should've been more clear on my posting - the reasoning for waiting until May is to see what the restrictions are at that point. Thanks for your help!

I didn't even think of the soft hold option - thanks for suggesting that!

Wait until May, you don't want to lose any money in addition to having to postpone again! May is plenty of time to let guests know to cancel a July flight.
